Sam didn't appear to be in the best of moods as he went to open the library, even with extra coffee in his hands.

"Yeah, because you'd much rather ride next to me than next to Dawn," Dean teased.

"I want to ride next to both of you equally," Sam said. "And me riding shotgun means Alec would be in the back, which means the two of you wouldn't be doing anything bad in the front seat while you're supposed to be driving."

"Yeah, like we're going to be doing anything when I'm driving," Dean said, rolling his eyes. Completely ignoring the fact that they had. But that was when they were in the car alone.

"You'll have to excuse me for not completely believing you when you say that," Sam replied.

"Do you seriously think I'd ever do anything that could risk the Impala?" Dean asked.

Sam laughed and shook his head. "No, I guess not. And since me getting to drive is totally out of the question..."

"Maybe," Dean allowed. "If I can be sure you won't get distracted arguing with Alec."

"I'd be too busy focusing on the road, and on driving safely," Sam promised. He was pretty sure that would be true, at least.

"We'll see," Dean said grudgingly. Sammy had almost as much right to drive the Impala as Dean did, but he wanted to make sure he was up to it first.

Sam grinned. That was a small step in getting to drive, but it was a good one. "Great! We'll definitely see."

"Maybe for your birthday," Dean said.

"Really?" Sam said, perking up visibly.

"Yeah, sure, why not?" Dean said, unable to begruge Sam when he got all hopeful like that.

Sam let out a little cheer, practically beaming at Dean. "I'm totally holding you to that. No backing out later."

"Hey, whenever have I backed out of anything?" Dean asked.

"You don't, but most things don't usually involve the Impala," Sam pointed out.

"Well you're aware that if you crash the car, I'll kill you, right?"

Sam gave a long-suffering brotherly sigh. "Yes, Dean, I know."

Dean grinned widely again. "Then there's no reason for me to back out is there?"

"None at all," Sam said quickly. "I'll take good care of the Impala while we drive, I promise."

"I know you will, Sammy," Dean told him, clapping a hand on his shoulder.

Sam glanced up at Dean and smiled. "I know I might not have made this clear yesterday, but I'm glad you had a good spring break."

"Thanks," Dean said, smiling at him. "And hey, tell you what. You figure out somewhere you want to go and next time we have a few days free, you and I can roadtrip if you want."

"Okay. That sounds great," Sam replied, letting his grin speak for how pleased that idea made him. It really did make him feel better to have Dean suggest something like that.

"I should let you get back to the important work playing with your little imaginary computer people," Dean teased, standing up.
