Rikku flipped around a bit more, then shook her head. "One whole sentence. That's gratitude for you." She checked the Index but couldn't find any relevant entries.
"You know, once we figure this all out, we should leave our notes somewhere. So that if things get screwed up, the next group doesn't have to start over like we did."
"Predestination paradox," Zack said. "We find something that gives us an idea to go back in time, then while we're back there we cause whatever it was to give us the idea to be created."
He smiled. "That's a good idea, you never know when you might need something like that." He looked down at his book again. "Judging by these records there seems to be a definite pattern with the portal's appearances and disappearances over the years."
Rikku scratched her head. "So, why is that a paradox? Seems like it just ties off the loose ends. Neat little loop, though."
She looked over his shoulder. "What kind of pattern? Do you think you can figure out when it's going to open next?"
"Lucas must have known. That's why he called us all there, right? To see it open. So he must have known that it would. So he knew the pattern, at least, right?"
"As far as I can tell," Zack pointed to the page. "It appears for a couple of days, disappears for a day or two, then reappears for another couple of days before it disappears for good. At least until the next cycle."
"That would be a good plan," Zack nodded. "If I'm right about this, the portal should open again sometime tomorrow evening, then again the morning after."
