Library, Monday [2/19]

Yomiko had spent the entire weekend holed up in her basement, working on a translation of Russian fairytales for extra cash. So she had no idea anything unusual had happened that weekend. Sometimes, it paid to be oblivious.

And again, now with a stack of notes. The books were on the history of Fandom, quantum mechanics and Weird Stuff.

Irulan watched the boy and his stack of notes and was glad that she wasn't in any class he was in.

Lucas eventually looked up and noticed he was being watched. He shifted in his seat and put a hand over his notes, not that it would do any good. He went back to writing.

"You're homework must be really hard." She observed.

"Oh, it's not homework. It's...well," he leaned a little closer. "It's a secret project."

"Secret project?" She echoed, curious, "Of what nature?"

Lucas hesitated. He eyed her, wondering where and when she came from. "Of an experimental nature. Are you from a different time period to now? I mean, no offense, but you dress differently to early 21st century teenagers, so I figure...are you?"

Irulan nodded, "I am from the very far future."

Lucas had guessed past, but history wasn't his strong suit. "Well then maybe you'll understand what I'm doing. I found something, a portal I guess you could call it, but more of a random anomaly. The readings I get from it indicate that it's some kind of rift in time. I'm trying to figure out if it's a new thing or if it's been in Fandom before."

Books were much preferable to television, Balthier had decided. None of the television programs that he had seen thus far seemed to have the depth of character to them. Thusly Balthier found himself in the library with an armful after going through his own.

He recognized Lucas as some one he'd spoken to a few times… he thought, but the schematics and books on his desk were what really caught his eye. They were very similar to diagrams and such for the flying ships back home, and even more disturbingly some of the things he’d seen in his father’s office before he went crazy.

He paused. "I say Lucas, what have you got there?"

"Nothing," Lucas said too quickly. "I mean, just a few books." More than a few.

"Right. Point for next time you're trying to cover something up, don't respond so quickly," Baltheir said as he put down his books. "Now either you're trying to build an airship, have something highly dangerous and hush-hush, or both?"

He was really just teasing, but Balthier's humor was always kind of dry.

Lucas grimaced. He was no spy. He sighed and stopped covering his notes. "How much do you know about the tears in the multiverse that allow people from different universes to come here?"

Now he had Balthier there.

The pirate took a seat, debating a moment on how to answer. "That's a hard one, considering I myself seem to come from a difference universe than this one. How I came here was by flying though some dense, what my people call, 'magically' infused mist, but it's fairly common where I come from and generally avoided. Why?"

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] imissmydolphin.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Because I think I found one, and I'm pretty sure I know when it's going to come back. That's what all the books are for. I'm trying to find some record of it throughout Fandom's history."

"Hmm, perhaps try something for everytime there is an influx of new students?"

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] imissmydolphin.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
His eyes widened and he nodded quickly. "I hadn't thought of that. Listen, uh, thanks. If you're interested, I'm probably going to try to send something through tomorrow and find out where it goes. If you want to come see."

Dick was in the library for the second time in a month. He sometimes even surprised himself. He looked over at the books Lucas was looking through.

"Dude, tell me that's for school." he says.

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] imissmydolphin.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Do you want me to tell you the truth or tell you it's for school?"

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] surferboy-09er.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
"The truth has got to be more interesting than school." says Dick. "Tell me."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] imissmydolphin.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Lucas knew jocks. Jocks were in no way a threat to his experiment. If history was anything to go by, he figured Dick would get bored by the time he was halfway through. Of course, that was in a normal school, not Fandom. "I found a tear in the universe that probably leads to another place or time. From the readings I have so far, I'm thinking another time."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] surferboy-09er.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Soooo what? You gonna Wormhole X-Treme it?" asked Dick. "I love that show."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] imissmydolphin.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know what that means." There was no Wormhole X-Treme in Lucas' universe, and thus he was deprived of the wonderful kitschy goodness that came with the grand adventures of Colonel Danning and his intrepid team. And the much dead underappreciated Captain Kochanski. "But I'm thinking about experimenting and sending something through and see what's on the other end."

Re: Fourth Period

[identity profile] surferboy-09er.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Cool!" exclaims Dick. "You gotta let me know if your universal time rip...thingamajig works."

[identity profile] imissmydolphin.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wanting to get on Dick's good side rather than find himself getting pushed over in the hallway for laughs, Lucas reluctantly agreed. "Sure. I'm probably going to try to send something through tomorrow night when it reopens."
