Crossposted because it's that important.

ENROLLMENT IS CLOSED

If you are not in the list that I posted a few days ago, have not been approved for posting at [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh directly by [livejournal.com profile] principalconnor you DO NOT belong here and will be forcibly removed. Enrollment is closed at this time and unless you are an approved player, you may not post in the various [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh communities or in the individual player journals. Period. Full stop.

There have been several instances of people who do not belong to this game reported to me. Unless and until enrollment is opened again and your character is personally approved by [livejournal.com profile] principalconnor, you may not post here. Period. In light of attracting people who have not read the rules and are showing up with duplicates of existing characters, something which is also strictly against the rules, I am also closing [livejournal.com profile] fandomtownies to membership until [livejournal.com profile] principalconnor gets back.

Only [livejournal.com profile] principalconnor can approve new students.

[livejournal.com profile] jerusalem_s is the right hand of God here, people, and what he says goes.

No one, and I mean NO ONE else is authorized to do anything when it comes to student/teacher/townie permissions.

This may eventually change but, as of right now, it's just the two of us... and I know damn well she hasn't approved anyone except our new webmaster in quite some time.

If this persists, everyone here should have these people friended and we will allow 'friends only' posts until the intruders desist.

Please be polite, but inform non-members that they cannot play here without first waiting for open enrollment and then being approved directly by [livejournal.com profile] principalconnor.

Thank you.

Problem is? I've seen ONE player complain. One. And we're being given no opportunity to discuss it. Does this mean I can ask for everyone to please stop with the overwhelming angst, and they'll be told to? I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen.

And I've made positive comments the admins agreed with. Hell, I'll go find the posts if you want. The problem is I've also made several that seem to have been wholey ignored. Admittedly, the threads get full and complicated, and I can't expect anyone to read and reply to everything, but I'd like to know what I have to say has a chance of being considered. I'm not getting that feeling anymore. I don't have personal hostility towards anyone here, honest to god, I just feel like there are more and more rules and less and less actually *happening.*

And I know I'm not the only one. Everyone else has just been doing their grumbling on personal journals. I'm not asking for special consideration, or trying to control other peoples' playing, I just want to be able to discuss some of this stuff before it gets thrown at us as if out of nowhere. I really don't think that's too much to ask.

I like knowing where I stand. At this point? I am occasionally honestly afraid to reply in the way I feel my character would, because every time I turn around, there's a new restriction. I've fallen into a bad habit of only replying to my classes because at least there I know the rules and repercussions.

Like I said, I want to have fun here. I don't want to have to bail on it after only two weeks, but when I'm spending more time worrying about the rules than I do actually getting to play, that gets hard.

*shrug* What few complaints I've had, I chose not to complain in public. Just one person, just one complaint, I take it to the administrators.

I have never felt afraid to respond in character. Then again, I'm not getting a whole lot of play time in because a lot of the playing being done is in large involved plots that I don't feel welcome trying to even hang on the fringes of.

It gets confusing since all players bring their own expectations to the game. In this thread alone so far there's been the declaration that this really isn't a high school and so things should be looser than for a high school and in just a few comments down someone else says it's like a high school and certain high school elements (ie cliques) should be expected.

*shrug* Whatever. It was said it's hard to respond to everything and I agree it is. But when I comment to someone and someone else does as well and the second person is known to the commentee so I get ignored in favor of the 'known' commentor...doesn't really give me much reason to try.

I'm not sure what all these rules are that people keep complaining about. Could be that they just don't affect my character being who he is. Most of it seems to me to just be common sense anyway. That's my take at any rate.

I'd rather see a tight hand trying to keep some semblance of control than to have this turn into a free-for-all which is fun for a handful of people and not very fun for the rest of us because toes and other body parts get trampled. I didn't join a game for total anarchy. A certain amount of controlled chaos is expected, yes. And should be encouraged. Not unchecked chaos.

A correction...not "In this thread". Should have read "in this entry's comments".

If you're going to be around later tonight (5 PM or so Pacific Time), feel free to drop me a line (contacts on my info page); I'd love to work out some way for one or both of my characters to interact with yours.

[identity profile] positive-angel.livejournal.com 2005-09-23 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok! I'll be in front of the computer and TV since it's SciFi night here at the house and we don't miss SGA and BSG on Fridays.

I think to a certain extent that's one of the advantages of the cliques and such. If you're in this game for A you can just hang out with people doing A and not interfere much with those who are only here for B or C.

When it sucks is when you have people who are here for, say, D and who can't find anyone else who's here for that too.

Yep. Especially in light of the fact that some of us don't have a 'fandom' represented to bind us together. We just do what we can to have interactions.

I think my point got missed. I'm not against having rules. Rules are good. Rules prevent wank. But in this case, the rules are causing wank and are driving players off (if what I've seen in player journals is any indication) and I think it's because as far as I can tell, the system is currently functioning thusly:

*Player A sees something they don't like. Player A writes admin*

*admin tells everyone to stop doing what player A doesn't like*

What I would like is an opportunity for everyone to discuss the new rules between those two events. Because if the majority of the players agree it should be a rule? Great.

But if it's two, or three, or even seven people out of a hundred + and the rule gets made anyway? There's a problem, because you then have one very vocal subset of players essentially dictating the game rules for everyone else, and that's not going to be good for the longevity of the game, especially when another group starts to feel they're always the target of these newly imposed rules. (Which is why you probably haven't noticed them much... they seem to be affecting a certain segment of the school population rather more than the rest of it.)

maybe I am missing the point

Since I don't have a lot of friends in the game (numbering on one hand) I don't see the complaints in player journals. Maybe they should take it up with the administrators if they want something done?

Administration by committee doesn't work. Someone has to be the final decision maker. If some of the decisions made thus far had gone to 'committee' they would still be in debate.

Excuse me if I don't see a whole lot of spell slinging in this game so far but a hell of a lot of gun waving and gun bragging and gun complaining and gun threats. So this 'silent majority' seems to be quite vocal in their own right.

There's a problem, because you then have one very vocal subset of players essentially dictating the game rules for everyone else,

Couldn't this be said about any subset of players complaining about the rules, for or against, not just the ones who the rules seem to inconvenience?

If they are worried about their 'rights being inpinged upon' why are they not writing the admins about it? If the 'vocal minority' is being heard and managing to make all these new rules, it seems the 'unheard majority' would be able to affect sweeping changes back to the way they wanted it before, if they would just write the admins about it.

*shrug*

I am curious about how you determined it's only two or three or seven people complaining. I think if someone went back and took count of the players that have been playing regularly, you'll see it isn't the 200 characters all playing at once but probably a core of 50 or so. (I don't have the time to go through several pages of the comms to count the different people posting).

I am curious how you can say that the majority of people who have said they don't have time for a time intensive game like fandomhigh has been, it's been because of these rules.

Who's to say they haven't quit because they didn't feel like they fit in to all the little subsets of players and groupings and after trying, decided not to try anymore?

Or...you know...didn't have time for a time intensive game like fandomhigh, like they said?

I've noticed the recent spate of players dropping out have been players giving up a character because...they don't have time to carry as many as they have.

Just some thoughts.

I'm away from the net for a week and a bit but when I get back you wanna hang out with caroline some? She likes your hair ;)

That I understand. And I certainly don't want you to think I don't understand how hard your job is. I do, trust me. I think the grumbling in private journals has come about because they don't feel discussing it here is going to do any good. There's still a lot of annoyance with how the weapons ban has been carried out, etc, and I think they've resigned themselves to the fact that nothing they say is going to make a difference anymore. But you're right. I should be writing all this up in a voicemail, I guess.

Which I'll do when I have the brainpower, and feel like I'm not just repeating what I've already said to everyone else involved.

As for the rest--I know this is part paranoia on my part but... I'm begining to not trust the people I play with, so I find myself not saying things or doing things I would normally for fear someone somewhere is going to take offence. We have a wide variety of characters here, and they're all going to behave differently. I'm getting the sinking feeling there are some people out there that haven't found a way to deal with that in a constructive manner.

[identity profile] marsheadtilt.livejournal.com 2005-09-23 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to interact with your character - but haven't found any common grounds with either of mine to do so.

[identity profile] littleluck.livejournal.com 2005-09-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. She's really not hard to talk to. I haven't had a chance to be involved in any of the parties, etc. because I work second shift *and* Saturdays. Makes it a bit of a problem to get out there and talk with other people.

We'll get something together then. I'm actually on vacation next week and my net access will be spotty.

Veronica would definitely not run into her at the firing range though :) Maybe the coffee shop? Veronica likes it there.

Or where does Domino live in the dorm? V's on the 2nd floor.

[identity profile] littleluck.livejournal.com 2005-09-24 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Dom seems to live at the coffee shop when she's not off shooting things, so that could work. She was going to be there tonight, but the town seems to be having a zombie problem, so she'll just have to make her own. And she lives up in the west attic.
