The door to the Ethics classroom rocked back on its hinges as per usual but instead of a cloaked Sith Lord, a small ball hovered its way into the room.

It was black. It was shiny. It was incredibly menacing.

It surveyed the class for a long, quiet moment before Vader entered the room.

"There was a rebel captured recently in my home galaxy," Vader began, "who possessed knowledge about where the headquarters of her wrong-headed and illegal organization was located. After extensive interrogation, it was decided that extreme measures must be taken to get her to reveal her information."

Vader paused, the only sound in the room his ventilation unit.

"So we destroyed her home planet from space."

Vader paced in front of his desk, his black cape sweeping out behind him. "This is an interrogation droid," he continued, waving his hand at the hovering orb. "There are times when asking politely for information accomplishes nothing and blowing up a planet is inconvenient."

It was very clear that the interrogation droid had no capacity for talking, though. It was an extremely advanced instrument of torture.

"Today, we will conduct an experiment," Vader said, staring down the students. "Half of you will be rebel traitors who possess information about the location of your secret base." Those students received a slip of paper on their desks. "The other half of you are Imperial guards trying to obtain this information from your prisoner. I, personally, do not care what form your...questioning takes, but you cannot use actual physical violence."

There was a long pause. "In this particular exercise. In a real interrogation, it is practically required. When you reach a stalemate in your negotiations--and feel free to shoot at the prisoners with the water pistols from last week, for I do not see how getting wet can possible be construed as physical violence--," he said to the interrogators, pointing towards the box on his desk, "you may talk with your partner about how far you would be willing to go if the school would allow you to use physical violence, or if you had more time to get the prisoner to become...more pliable. Sleep deprivation also works very well."

He spun on his heel. "And don't do anything to make the interrogator droid notice you. Its programming is very sensitive. It would be a lot of paperwork if any of you were inadvertently tortured."

Katara grinned back at him. "Nope. Can't get me that easily."

"Well, had to give it a chance to be easy." Dean sat down, and seemingly idly pulled out the igniter that Dawn had given him for Christmas and started flipping it on and off.

She eyed the lighter a bit warily. Fire wasn't exactly her favourite element. "Wouldn't that defeat the point?" she asked. "I wouldn't be a very good rebel that way."

"Just a smart one," Dean said, flashing her a grin again. He picked up a piece of paper and lit one corner on fire, watching it as it burned. "Fire's pretty amazing, don't you think?"

She shrugged, still watching the fire. "Not really. Just an element."

"Me, I could watch a flame for hours." He held the paper up as it was consumed, only dropping it when it was consumed up to his fingers. Then he lit another piece of paper and held it out to Katara. "It's kinda mesmerising. Calming."

She didn't touch the paper.

"It's violent and aggressive," Katara pointed out. "Using it leaves you vulnerable because all fire can do is attack."

Dean waved the paper as it burned in front of Katara's face. "Depends on your strategy, how you use it. But yeah," he grinned a little wolfishly, "it can be one hell of an attack."

With a flick of movement, Katara had pulled a flow of water from her waterskin and whipped it across the paper, putting the fire out.

"Yes. It can," she agreed.

Dean merely smiled. "Got a reaction outta you, didn't I?" He flicked the igniter on again. "Fire bother you?"

"I don't like firebenders," she said, just barely not glancing towards Zuko. She glanced at the igniter, hand twitching towards her waterskin again, but she tried to control the movement.

"I love fire," Dean said, holding the igniter between them. "I've played with it a lot -- I can pretty much make it sit up and beg now if I want it to."

Katara rolled her eyes. "I doubt it. You're not a firebender."

"Within the boundaries of fire's natural inclinations, given," Dean allowed. "But that still leaves a lot I can do." He picked up another piece of paper and held it above the flame of the igniter, slowly lowering it until it started smouldering and eventually burst into flame.

Katara frowned and sent another water whip to put out the paper and douse the lighter at the same time.

When the lighter didn't go out, she clenched her fist and tried again, just to flick the flame off the top of the igniter.
