Folklore and Fact: Mystical Artifacts Week 3 [Thurs/2nd Period]

If Sakura had heard or seen anything of her students' misadventures over the past weekend, she didn't show it. For all they knew she could still be laughing at them on the inside -- not that she was. She'd had to deal with three of her teammates being turned into animals, so this was nothing particularly new to her. (Really, once you'd lived through the trainwreck of amusement that was Akashi flopping around on the ground after he'd reverted from being a goldfish, everything else was a piece of cake.)

This morning, she stood in front of the class at the yellow table, upon which several black and gold locked chests stood. "Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to be examining a few of the tools and objects that are a part of a treasure hunter's everyday job, to give you an idea of how we identify and take possession of artifacts."

She touched the sensor pad atop the first of the lockboxes, and it began to collapse until all that remained was a thick metal card. Handing it to the nearest student to pass around, Sakura explained, "These compact lockboxes are a vital component of our operations. Most of them are keyed specifically to myself and my teammates, but I've adjusted this one so you can all test it for yourselves. Any Precious artifacts that we acquire are immediately put into these boxes and transported to safe storage."

The second lockbox that she opened contained a pair of flutelike instruments; the third, a simple wooden box with a distinctive grain pattern; the fourth, a battered, leatherbound notebook. "We'll be covering the Pipes of Hamelin and the Potion of Immortality in a few weeks, but for now I'll use them to demonstrate another tool that we use." Sakura reached for the pouch on her left sleeve and pulled out what appeared to be a slightly bulky mobile phone, rotating its screen 90 degrees to the right. "Any Precious artifact will have a Hazard Level reading; one of the Accellular's uses is to determine that. The higher the Hazard Level, the more potential danger, obviously."

Pointing the Accellular at the two pipes, she pressed a button to activate the blacklight scanning ray. After a moment, she held up the device to show them the Hazard Level displayed on its tiny screen. "The Accellular has," she paused enigmatically, "other uses as well, but this is one of the most important. What you've found could be a fake; what looks perfectly harmless could be the opposite, which is true more often than not. But of course, that all comes after the hard part: actually getting to your target, though some would say that part is the most fun." Sakura suspected students were more interested in the electronic devices than the good old-fashioned hard work. "Sometimes you simply stumble across an artifact, but most of the time it takes diligent research, hard work, and risk. Will and intelligence are crucial to the job, but other tools are also necessary. There are . . ." She paused again. "Only five Accellulars in existence, and their use is highly restricted. However, I have received permission from both SGS and the school administration to give you these."

As she went around the room handing each student a small handheld device, she explained, "The Scope Shot is a multitool developed by SGS. Aside from being a compact telescope, it can fire grappling hooks and signal flares, and contains a miniature parachute and a knife blade." Sakura paused and fixed the class with a stern look. "These are tools, not weapons or toys, and you will treat them as tools. Anyone caught using their Scope Shot in a reckless manner, inside of class or out, will receive detention, at the very least."

She waited a few minutes for the students to settle again. "Come up to the table and examine the items here; you can use the Accellular to scan them yourselves, if you'd like," she added, demonstrating the scan mode again. "And if any of you would like to scan personal items of yours, you can also do that. Do not, however, touch any of the items in the lockboxes."

That said, she stood back to let the students come up to the table -- keeping a watchful eye on everything.

[OOC: Class Roster and Info Post. OMG I was wordy this week, and hyperlink-happy. OCD is up!]

"People kept giving me drinks," Dean pointed out. "Couldn't be rude and turn them down."
likethegun: (i'm laughing while looking down)

"Oh right, because saying, 'Sorry, I can't drink any more, or I'll look and feel like death tomorrow,' would have been really insulting," Sam replied.

"Just wait until your birthday rolls around," Dean threatened.
likethegun: (i'm laughing while looking down)

"Oh, because then you'll do what?" Sam asked, laughing again. "I don't drink like you do."

Dean grinned wickedly at his brother in spite of his hangover. "You don't hold your alcohol like I do either."
likethegun: (i'm making my o rly? face)

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

Sam opened his mouth and realized that he had no response for that except to say that it was completely true. "I'm feeling sufficiently warned now, thank you."

Dean reached over and patted Sammy's arm. "Wouldn't be sporting otherwise."
likethegun: (i'm smirking at dean)

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

Sam rolled his eyes. "Between you and Dawn, I'm worried that my birthday is going to become a bigger deal than it needs to be."

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe it should be a big deal," Dean said, giving him an honest look.
likethegun: (i'm making my o rly? face)

"Why? 15 isn't an important birthday, at least not compared to turning 16. And it's not like we didn't get to celebrate last year," Sam pointed out.

"Not like we can here. Besides, I was busy being all pissed off last year about Dad sending us away," Dean admitted. "I can do better."
likethegun: (i'm watching dean)

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-01-25 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, so you weren't the most pleasant company then. But you don't have to do better," Sam insisted.

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah I do," Dean said seriously. "'Specially after last night. Dude, that was an awesome party."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-01-25 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"So awesome you're still feeling the effects today?" Sam teased. "I'm just glad it turned out as well as I wanted it to be."

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"You did good, Sammy," Dean told him with a grin. "I think the only gifts that top it is Dad giving me the Impala and getting told I'm going to be a big brother." He wrinkled his nose teasingly at Sammy. "Even if I'd ask for a puppy."
likethegun: (i'm breaking out the puppyface)

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-01-25 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think I'm close enough on occasion," Sam said, breaking out the puppy eyes for added effect.

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, you were a good substitute," Dean admitted easily, the puppy eyes having less effect since Sammy wasn't using them to actually ask for anything. "Don't have to worry about leash laws when I go out with you for one thing."
likethegun: (i'm smirking at dean)

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-01-25 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"No leashes, and hopefully you won't have to be tying me up again any time soon either," Sam joked. "Have you taken your precious car out for a spin yet?"

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Haven't had a chance," Dean said. "Was drunk, then there was sex and then I was asleep and then there was hungover going to class. Maybe this afternoon."
likethegun: (i'm talking about the upstairs brain)

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-01-25 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"You really could have left that second part off the list, you know," Sam said, squirming uncomfortably.

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean grinned smugly. "Nah, I couldn't."
likethegun: (i'm talking about the upstairs brain)

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-01-25 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"You totally could," Sam argued. "I don't need the activity level of your sex life dangled in front of me."

"I'd ask if you were jealous, but since it's Alec..."
likethegun: (i'm headachey or having a vision)

Re: Scan/Examine the (Fake) Manuscript

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-01-25 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam groaned. "I hate you for making me think about things like that. And I am not jealous."
