Folklore and Fact: Mystical Artifacts Week 3 [Thurs/2nd Period]

If Sakura had heard or seen anything of her students' misadventures over the past weekend, she didn't show it. For all they knew she could still be laughing at them on the inside -- not that she was. She'd had to deal with three of her teammates being turned into animals, so this was nothing particularly new to her. (Really, once you'd lived through the trainwreck of amusement that was Akashi flopping around on the ground after he'd reverted from being a goldfish, everything else was a piece of cake.)

This morning, she stood in front of the class at the yellow table, upon which several black and gold locked chests stood. "Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to be examining a few of the tools and objects that are a part of a treasure hunter's everyday job, to give you an idea of how we identify and take possession of artifacts."

She touched the sensor pad atop the first of the lockboxes, and it began to collapse until all that remained was a thick metal card. Handing it to the nearest student to pass around, Sakura explained, "These compact lockboxes are a vital component of our operations. Most of them are keyed specifically to myself and my teammates, but I've adjusted this one so you can all test it for yourselves. Any Precious artifacts that we acquire are immediately put into these boxes and transported to safe storage."

The second lockbox that she opened contained a pair of flutelike instruments; the third, a simple wooden box with a distinctive grain pattern; the fourth, a battered, leatherbound notebook. "We'll be covering the Pipes of Hamelin and the Potion of Immortality in a few weeks, but for now I'll use them to demonstrate another tool that we use." Sakura reached for the pouch on her left sleeve and pulled out what appeared to be a slightly bulky mobile phone, rotating its screen 90 degrees to the right. "Any Precious artifact will have a Hazard Level reading; one of the Accellular's uses is to determine that. The higher the Hazard Level, the more potential danger, obviously."

Pointing the Accellular at the two pipes, she pressed a button to activate the blacklight scanning ray. After a moment, she held up the device to show them the Hazard Level displayed on its tiny screen. "The Accellular has," she paused enigmatically, "other uses as well, but this is one of the most important. What you've found could be a fake; what looks perfectly harmless could be the opposite, which is true more often than not. But of course, that all comes after the hard part: actually getting to your target, though some would say that part is the most fun." Sakura suspected students were more interested in the electronic devices than the good old-fashioned hard work. "Sometimes you simply stumble across an artifact, but most of the time it takes diligent research, hard work, and risk. Will and intelligence are crucial to the job, but other tools are also necessary. There are . . ." She paused again. "Only five Accellulars in existence, and their use is highly restricted. However, I have received permission from both SGS and the school administration to give you these."

As she went around the room handing each student a small handheld device, she explained, "The Scope Shot is a multitool developed by SGS. Aside from being a compact telescope, it can fire grappling hooks and signal flares, and contains a miniature parachute and a knife blade." Sakura paused and fixed the class with a stern look. "These are tools, not weapons or toys, and you will treat them as tools. Anyone caught using their Scope Shot in a reckless manner, inside of class or out, will receive detention, at the very least."

She waited a few minutes for the students to settle again. "Come up to the table and examine the items here; you can use the Accellular to scan them yourselves, if you'd like," she added, demonstrating the scan mode again. "And if any of you would like to scan personal items of yours, you can also do that. Do not, however, touch any of the items in the lockboxes."

That said, she stood back to let the students come up to the table -- keeping a watchful eye on everything.

[OOC: Class Roster and Info Post. OMG I was wordy this week, and hyperlink-happy. OCD is up!]

"I suppose that because of the hazard level this is scanning that these are the genuine article?" Really, it seemed kind of silly to him to have pipes just to lure away children, or rats for that matter. Yes, Balthier had done his reading.

Pippi is fascinated by the lockbox and the scope shot.

She takes notes but frowns at the idea of just locking something away just because it's special.

"Level zero?" He chuckled. "Professor, did you drop your notebook into the lagoon?"

Pippi didn't bring anything particularly interesting with her to scan, maybe next week.

She scans the scope shot and then turns the Accellular on herself, just to see what would happen.

"Is this reading for the box or what's in it?"

"So then one lures away, while the other calls back?" Now that made more sense.

"I should think it might explode from such a thing." Pippi said.

Valentine, who continues to hide under his desk.

Valentine was too weirded out by the events of the past week to decide that sitting in his seat was a safe course of action.
So he deigned to spend today's class paying attention from under his desk.
It was safer down there. Maybe.

Valentine was quite curious-- he just had to find out. After all, everyone had accused him of being a demon, or alien, or whatever, and it was because of his face.
So, with something of a quizzical expression on his lips, he peeled off his mask, another mask just like it remaining on his face underneath.
He would find out, one way or another, if there was something to those accusations.
