As seen on tv: Forensic Science, 1/24 5th Period

Abby welcomed students into the danger shop with the box of lab coats as usual. "Afternoon, guys! We've got a lot to do before we head to the crime scene so lets get cracking."

Walking over to a chart, Abby explained the human ABO blood type system and how to test blood to determine it's type. "Each lab station is going to be set up with this testing equipment." She held up test strips, droppers and the antigens for blood testing. "It's easy. Drop the blood on the strips, add the antigens and see if they react. If the blood reacts to the A antigen it's A blood, if it reacts to A and B antigen it's AB blood, etc. Then do a RH test and to see whether the blood is positive or negative."

Abby walked over to a large block of gray clay that had several knifes sticking out of it at all angles. Grabbing a large knife, she drew it out and then plunged it back into the clay quickly. "This is forensics clay. You're going to stab it today to see what sort of wound different objects make. Match the wound in the clay to the wound in the victim and you've found your murder weapon."

"Now, let's get to the fun stuff!" Abby moved to open a door onto the crime scene, an upscale study that held, among other things, a deceased Molly Hayes, laying across a couch. "Police found Molly during a party at a very ritzy house and detained the other guests. They need you to figure out how she died, what was used to kill her and who did it."

"Also..." Abby looked around the room for Broots. "Just to make things clear, the dead people aren't really dead. The blood isn't real and the bad guys are figments of the danger shop's imagination."

"Now, get to work!"

Lana tested the blood, finding it to be A- and carefully noted that on her hand-out with the other information she'd collected. She spent a fair amount of time plunging weapons into the clay to look at wound patterns - far more than she needed to, actually, partly because it was fun and partially because she thought it might come in handy some day.

Ami tested the vial of the killer's blood she got from the body. Finding it to be AB she wrote it down. The clay was just plain fun, and she stabbed it with every possible thing, including her pencil, just to be sure.

"Take that." Billy stabbed the clay with the scissors.

"Clearly the clay has done something bad to you, you are taking revenge on it." Ami smiled as she plunged the lead pipe into the clay.

"Yes but I think I'm willing to let bygones be bygones now." he answered. "I never thought a lead pipe could be used as anything other than a bludgeoning tool. Well, aside from an actual pipe I mean."

"but it makes such nice circular indents." Ami grinned.

"Very distinctive yes." he agreed.

"Thus telling me that the elad pipe had nothing to do with the wound on this image." she stabbed the clay with the tiny ship "Also very distinctive, and i think a bit more like the image.

"Who knew forensics could be so artsy?" Billy asked, sculpting the clay a bit before bashing it with the crystal award.

For some reason, playing with clay is far more attractive than dealing with vials of blood, even if it's fake blood. So Mac starts with the creation of wound models.

Cassie was doing her own work with one of the umbrellas, and gave Mac a wave.

Re: Lab

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Mac waved back, still holding the letter opener she was moulding. She then quickly put it back down realising that waving sharp things around was probably a bad idea. "Cassie, right?"

Re: Lab

[identity profile] robotboyfetish.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," she said. "You're... I want to say Mark, and that can't be right."

Re: Lab

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh, not quite," Mac replied giving her head a little shake. "Mac. You were close, though. Points for trying."

Re: Lab

"Don't know where the extra syllable came from," Cassie said. "How's stuff?"

Re: Lab

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Stuff... goes great. Really great," she said, smiling at Cassie as she fiddled with her potential weapon. "And? I got to practice espionage earlier this morning, and stab clay now. A big 180 degree swing from last week."

Re: Lab

[identity profile] robotboyfetish.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Cassie nodded. "Stuff's good here, too. Heard you were at my friend's half-naked party."

Zack ran the bloodwork, before meticulously testing the weapons.

Zero ran the bloodwork and found it to be O+ before she started testing objects. She kinda liked jabbing the forensics clay with them.

"What have you got so far?" Parker stabbed the clay with a piece of glass. "And how goes the video-editing?"

Zero enthusiastically stabbed the clay with the sailboat, then made notes on it as she told Parker, "It goes. I'm waitin' on a coupla mp3s for the soundtrack."

"How long is it going to be?" Parker stabbed her clay with a letter opener, then looked pretty happy. "Hmm. Also, Weiss and I are okay. Yay."

If the lump of clay wound up looking like a crude bust of a man wearing a cowl, it's just your imagination. He started by testing the weapons. Then he tested the blood. B- for the killer.

[identity profile] imissmydolphin.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucas tested the blood and found it was B negative. That wasn't a very common blood type, so that would make narrowing down the suspects easier. He had way too much fun testing out the weapons from different angles and with different amounts of force until he found a reasonable match. He loved this part of class.
