As seen on tv: Forensic Science, 1/24 5th Period

Abby welcomed students into the danger shop with the box of lab coats as usual. "Afternoon, guys! We've got a lot to do before we head to the crime scene so lets get cracking."

Walking over to a chart, Abby explained the human ABO blood type system and how to test blood to determine it's type. "Each lab station is going to be set up with this testing equipment." She held up test strips, droppers and the antigens for blood testing. "It's easy. Drop the blood on the strips, add the antigens and see if they react. If the blood reacts to the A antigen it's A blood, if it reacts to A and B antigen it's AB blood, etc. Then do a RH test and to see whether the blood is positive or negative."

Abby walked over to a large block of gray clay that had several knifes sticking out of it at all angles. Grabbing a large knife, she drew it out and then plunged it back into the clay quickly. "This is forensics clay. You're going to stab it today to see what sort of wound different objects make. Match the wound in the clay to the wound in the victim and you've found your murder weapon."

"Now, let's get to the fun stuff!" Abby moved to open a door onto the crime scene, an upscale study that held, among other things, a deceased Molly Hayes, laying across a couch. "Police found Molly during a party at a very ritzy house and detained the other guests. They need you to figure out how she died, what was used to kill her and who did it."

"Also..." Abby looked around the room for Broots. "Just to make things clear, the dead people aren't really dead. The blood isn't real and the bad guys are figments of the danger shop's imagination."

"Now, get to work!"

Parker was hugely relieved that this week's lecture wasn't hitting any personal buttons for her. She'd already had a blood type weirdness occur to her last semester in Bio, so this was stuff she could cope with.

She was also glad the Troopers weren't anywhere near as good as the Danger Shop this weekend.

Billy was possibly I bit too excited to stab the clay. On the other hand he was a teenage boy, so maybe he was just the right amount of excited.

Molly was dead.

She couldn't help herself though. When Abby was giving the introduction, she lifted her head enough to smile and wave at the class.

Crime Scene

Check out the scene, chat amongst yourselves, check for murder weapons. Try not to pass out.

The room is full of potential weapons. Letter opener, scissors, candlesticks, lead pipe, crystal award, golfing trophy, statuette, sharp bookend, metal hanger, picture frame, wee metal sailboat, umbrella.

[ooc: The wound photos that everyone will have gotten from Molly will have a different wound pattern so you can decide what weapon matches your photo. Also, take as many things back to the lab as you'd like. There's enough of each item to go around.]

Lana looked carefully at the photo, comparing it to the different possible weapons in the room, then gathered up a bunch of the ones she thought most likely to go test. She could always come back if she needed to.

Mac has her photo and is going around collecting up various lethal-looking items. Right now, she's trying to figure out whether she really thinks anyone could actually murder someone with a coathanger.

Ami carefully looked over the crime scene. After a long stare at the photo of the stab wound she took the wee metal sailboat to look at, along with several other items.

Billy picked up the crystal award, the golfing trophy, and the statuette. They seemed the most likely suspects. "Hmm, murder at a party? Jealous lover maybe?"

Lana tested the blood, finding it to be A- and carefully noted that on her hand-out with the other information she'd collected. She spent a fair amount of time plunging weapons into the clay to look at wound patterns - far more than she needed to, actually, partly because it was fun and partially because she thought it might come in handy some day.

Ami tested the vial of the killer's blood she got from the body. Finding it to be AB she wrote it down. The clay was just plain fun, and she stabbed it with every possible thing, including her pencil, just to be sure.

For some reason, playing with clay is far more attractive than dealing with vials of blood, even if it's fake blood. So Mac starts with the creation of wound models.

Zero ran the bloodwork and found it to be O+ before she started testing objects. She kinda liked jabbing the forensics clay with them.

The suspects are all lined up, holding out placards with their blood type on them. What? That could happen.

The wealthy homeowner, the suave stockbroker, the budding hollywood hunk, the jaded rock god, the rising political guru, the foreign pool boy, and of course, the butler.
