Anders stopped by the library as soon as Spy Tech was over to check up on Bridge. Only Bridge didn't seem to be here, and the stupid knot in Anders's stomach that had been getting knottier by the minute since yesterday got a few more kinks in it.
"Wait, isn't today supposed to be Bridge's day to work?"
"Oh, hi, Ms. Librarian . . . person. I knocked on his door this morning before my first period class," Anders said, frowning. "Maybe he was out cold, but I don't know."
"Yeah, I know. He's my best friend, and it's not like him at all." Anders blew out a breath. "I'm Anders, by the way. I came to check up on him 'cause I know he was kind of out of it yesterday, so if he's not here I really don't like how this is adding up."
"I'll drop by his room again later," Anders said. "I've got the combination to the lock, I can get in if I need to. Could you give me a call if he turns up, maybe? Or, you know . . . if he doesn't?"
"I'm sure he's fine and we're all worrying needlessly," Yomiko said optimistically. "Um. Would you like a bookmark?" she asked, proferring one. It never hurt to ask.
Rikku's eyes lit up. "I want to find these books! The, uh," she consulted the sheet, "Short History of Machine Tools and Studies in the History of Machine Tools and An Introduction to the History of Structural Mechanics. And A History of Technology. Oh! And A History of Mechanical Engineering. And similar books, I mean, they don't have to be about the history of it unless they're explaining how people got from one thing to the next, but I guess more about how it all works, and anything mechanical about tools and machina. I mean machines. And how they work and how to teach people how they work."
She took a breath and smiled, nervously. "But it's not exactly for class. I mean, I got this in class," she gestures to the handout, "but this is for me, not for something I need for class. I just need to know all of this. Is ... is that still okay?"
OOC: Sorry about the heading tags getting screwed up. I started to reply in the wrong place, then fixed it, and LJ didn't update that field, apparently.
"Of course!" Yomiko assured her. "You can check out books for any reason at all. Unless it's to deface or burn them or something. Okay, that's quite a list." She pulled up the catalog on her computer and said, "Let's get started."
Rikku shuddered when the librarian mentioned burning the books. "People would really do that?! That's terrible!" Considering Yevon, she thought, she couldn't be all that surprised.
"If that's too many, then I can just take a few for now. I mean, I'm gonna be here a while, I've got time, right?"
She was bouncing to herself in a restrained, quiet, library-appropriate sort of way, but she was definitely still bouncing.
"No, that's fine," Yomiko assured her as she noted down call numbers on a post-it. "But you'll have to bring them back and check them back out if you're not done with them all in two weeks." She smiled. It was nice to see someone so enthusiastic about books, even engineering books.
The library is closed for lunch, which today was a peanut butter sandwich and an apple. Ms. Readman didn't read during lunch for fear of getting goo on the books.
"He'd be here by now," she said, shaking her head. "He'd have run in in those cute little pajamas with the mittens and with his hair all stuck up, but he'd be here."
She shrugged. "Here, I'll call him and see." She pulled out her cell phone and hit a number on speed dial, and frowned when it went straight to voicemail. She left a message (http://bridge-carson.livejournal.com/1407.html?thread=721791#t721791) before hanging up and turning back to Yomiko. "Um. Want a cupcake?"

Clutched in her hands was one of the handouts from class, the one that kept mentioning machine tools.
She stopped in front of the woman at the desk and reminded herself: Library. Calm. No shouting, no bouncing. Calm.
She settled for fidgeting and held the paper out hopefully. "Could you, uh, help me find some things? Please?"
