Driver's Education - 3rd Period - 1/9

As the students enter the classroom, they might notice the large number of motivational posters with large slash marks on them.

(Teach those damn kittens to keep hanging in there.)

And they might also notice the man in the red and black outfit, leaning back in his chair with his feet propped up on the desk. He waited until all of the students were in the room before speaking.

"Good morning boys and girls! Welcome to Driver's Education," He said. "My name is Deadpool, call me that or Professor Wilson if you really feel the need to get all formal. Or Professor Deadpool. Oooo! I like that better. Call me Professor Deadpool."

He stood, passing out a syllabus to all of the students before moving back to his desk, leaning against the front of it. "I don't feel like teaching you kids anything today because it's the first class of the semester and nobody ever pays attention to those," Wade said. "Instead, I'm going to learn who all of you are. Unfortunately, not all of us teachers are telepaths and can just yank that information out of your fragile little minds. So I am going to have you all pick a partner, talk with them, and then tell me an interesting or insanely personal fact about 'em!"

At the end of class, just as everyone was filing out, Wade paused. "Oh yeah, my office hours are all day tomorrow. My empty, empty office is always open for your angsty teen drama needs."

"Interesting or insanely personal." Evie bit her lip, wondering how on earth she could make herself sound interesting. "I speak Arabic?"

"Cool," Conner said honestly. "Some days I'm lucky if I can speak English. How come you decided to learn Arabic?"

"Well, I didn't decide so much as grow up with it, in Cairo." Evie bit her lower lip, then said, "My mother's Egyptian, and completely bilingual. So I heard it all my life."

"Wow," Conner said, definitely impressed. "The closest I can come to that is my friend, Ethan, who created this computer program to translate some hieroglyphics on a statue we saw in a museum, and ended up awakening this ancient curse."

"Oooooo! A curse? What kind of curse?" Evie sat up straight, all awkwardness forgotten. "Was it from a pharoah, or a priest? And how did he make a computer program translate hieroglyphics?"

Conner held his hands up to ward off any more questions. "Hey, don't ask me how he did it! Ethan's the computer whiz. It was some pharaoh with a name I can't pronounce because it's stupid, OMG and it started by giving him really bad luck. No telling what else it would've done if we hadn't broken it when we did."

"Could you write to Ethan, and have him e-mail me with details?" Evie said, looking hopeful. "Please? Oh, please. I'd ever so much like to know. And how did you break it? That was frightfully brave of you."

"I guess I could," Conner replied. He was trying really hard not to smile too much at her eagerness, because it really was kind of cute. "And how we broke it . . . that was a long story involving a flying motorcycle and a swamp."

"A swamp. How does that figure into it?" Evie asked, mystified. "And thank you so much!" She sighed happily. "Oh, shall I tell this for your interesting thing to -- Professor Deadpool?" She gave the Driver's Ed teacher a rather askance look. "Or shall it be something else?"

"Sure, why not?" Conner agreed affably. "The whole reason I'm TAing this class is that he overheard me having a discussion with a friend about driving giant dinosaur vehicles into buildings. There isn't much else that can top that."

Re: Pick a Partner

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Dinosaur vehicles." Evie shook her head. "Your life is *so* much more exciting than mine. I'm going to be lucky to drive in London traffic when I complete this course. I doubt my father will let me drive in Cairo until I'm thirty."

Re: Pick a Partner

[identity profile] connernotconnor.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Is it worse than L.A. traffic?" asked Conner. "'cause I've heard really bad things about that."

Re: Pick a Partner

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"If L.A. has camels and livestock as well as motor scooters and roadsters, then it's probably comparable." Evie smiled. "But perhaps it's best I learn on something easy, first?"

Re: Pick a Partner

[identity profile] connernotconnor.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I've heard the people there can be kind of crazy, but I don't know if I'd take it that far. I wouldn't want to learn to drive there, though." Conner drummed his fingers idly on the table. "So, should I tell Prof D that you speak Arabic, or is there anything more interesting you'd rather have me share?"

Re: Pick a Partner

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, the bit about being one hundred and six years old, technically, might be interesting? But I'm not certain he'll believe you." Evie tilted her head and smiled. "But you can try!"

"It's Fandom. If he doesn't believe me now, he will soon enough," Conner said firmly. "Also, I think, yeah, you'd better stay away from L.A. traffic for now."
