Class 4: Magic

[OOC: Just so you know, if you're showing up and attempting the assignments, you're passing, no matter how bitchy Jareth gets about it. Sorry this is so late. I had crazy RL stuff to deal with. Also, if you haven't noticed by now, Jareth likes getting people's names wrong, on purpose.]

Today's Lecture:


"We've so far introduced manipulation and myth. Now I will introduce magic. How many of you think you know magic? Can you give me a definition?

Jareth waits, looking around the class.

"Magic is manipulating things and people in ways that others don't or can't. We are going to try an experiment." He twists his hands and a crystal appears.



Then a crystal appears in front of each of the students.

"This will show you your dreams--if you can manipulate it correctly. Too little, you will not see anything. Too far, and your dreams will seem like reality.

"Find partners and take turns...attempting to see. If your partner stops responding, raise your hand and we'll all take a little stroll into their dreams to fish them out."

"Maybe we should get some clarification here," Belthazor said. "Is this going to show us our dreams, show our partners our dreams, or show the class our dreams? Because anything outside our own heads could be dangerous all right."

Evie shakes her head. "I'm not open to the idea of having the entire class seeing what's in my head. It could be downright frightening."

Belthazor looked Evie over. "What's in your head that's so scary?"

Behind Evie's head, Angelus gave Bel a look to indicate that this girl just got all kinds of interesting as far as he was concerned.

To Evie, he said, "Yeah, same here. Things I've seen... let's just say I don't think they're appropriate for most schoolchildren."

Evie looked down at her hands where her fingers were interlocked. "I would have to agree with you on that. Some of the things I've seen...the things I want to do...the things I know...no, I don't think they'd be appropriate for anyone in class."

"The things you want to do?" Angelus looked at her curiously. "Wow. That sounds ominous. Is everything okay?"

Belthazor exchanged another look with Angelus. Very interesting, indeed. Evie definitely wasn't the quiet meek little thing she appeared to be. "Yeah, what do you want to do that's so inappropriate?" he asked.

Belthazor pokes Evie. "So, what do you want to do that's so inappropriate?" he asked.

Evelyn blushes and looks at Belthazor seriously.

"I'm not the innocent and frail person that all of the men here seem to think I am. I've done a lot of things in my life."

Belthazor looked Evie over, rather happy to be distracted from his current women issues. "Oh? Do tell."

Others cannot see your dreams. They are in the crystal. However, if you cannot control yourself in the face of your dreams, you risk being drawn into the crystal, in which case I shall have to fetch you out.

"Okay, then let's just get this over with," Belthazor said. It couldn't be too bad, right? He focused his thoughts on the crystal and let it conjure his dreams.

After staring motionlessly at the crystal for several minutes, Belthazor jerked awake. He stared about himself wildly, a panicked look on his face, then shimmered out of the room.

"Are you all right, Balthasaur?" Jareth is standing right in front of you.

"I thought for a moment I was going to have to go get you. It looked unpleasant."

Belthazor jumps a little as Jareth appears.

"I, uh, I'm all right now. It...wasn't what I expected."

"It rarely is." He smiles with lots of teeth.

"That was all...just a dream, right? Not a prediction of the future or anything. It's not necessarily what's going to happen, right?" His tone is almost pleading. "I mean, some of it I kind of want to, but not all of it."

It is not the future. It is what you want. Even if you don't want to want it.
