Internet for Dummies, Wednesday 12/20, 3rd Period

Abby had moved the desks in the computer lab around so there was a clear space in the middle of the room. She was standing there, bouncing slightly and holding an air horn.

"Welcome to our final class! You guys have been awesome and I really didn't feel like writing a final test so I came up with the internet olympics. You're going to be split up into teams and compete against each other for snazzy prizes." Abby waved an hand over a table piled with electronic goodies, NCIS hats and bags and of course, Caf-Pow.

"So grab team members and get ready for the first event, the logging-on relay. First team to successfully log online wins!"

Jamie booted up AOL and tried to log in.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Angela was regretting sitting near Jamie. "Still waiting?" she asked.

The modem suddenly made a staticky noise and followed it with a "bong bong" as it connected.

"There we go! Only 62 seconds!"

"Finally," Angela grumbled, not quite realizing that once she got home 62 seconds would seem like a really good time.

Her laptop had a wireless port, so it should have always been connected. Except it wasn't. "Why am I just getting a blank page when I clock on Internet Explorer?"

"Are you getting a signal?" Jamie asked.

"I don't know," Angela admitted. She squinted at her PC because I don't know how Macs work. "There's a little red thingy in the bottom corner?"

"Click it?" Jamie suggested. "Maybe it'll do something."

Angela double-clicked it. "It says it's searching for a connection," she said hopefully. "That sounds good, right?"

"Does it say where it's looking?" Jamie says peering over her shoulder. "Like. Under the desk or something?"

Angela shook her head. "Uh-uh. Oh, look, it found something .... but it says it's secure. What do you think that means?"

"That it feels free of fear or doubt and it can be it's own person?" Jamie suggested. Maybe he should have paid more attention in class.

"it's so nice my computer is at peace with the universe," Angela sighed. "Okay, this is taking longer than your dial-up. Should I restart or what?"

"Um. Yes. Or No," Jamie said looking confused. "Does it want something? A password? Tickets to Disneyworld?"

"A password?" Angela guessed wildly.

She stabbed in TRUSTNO1. "It works on Z-Cases," she said sheepishly.

Ray tried logging on. It looked like he succeeded and then the computer crashed and decided it had to download updates.

So, Ray waited. A full two minutes later, he finally logged on.

Considering Mac is used to her permanently internet connected laptop, she's not especially patient when it comes to this kind of thing. She wrinkled her nose in disgust at the incredible slowness of AOL.

"Oh, thank God," she said when Ray finally appeared to succeed and it seemed to be doing something useful.

She then tried logging on herself. Daring, considering her last encounter with the AOL man. After the fifth password error message she was starting to get more than a little frustrated.

After five minutes of hitting random buttons, getting disconected, and just generally having a miserable time, Briar managed to log on.

Kawalsky teamed up with Briar and tried logging on next.

And waited. Then some more. Then a little bit more.

Finally it pinged on after four minutes.

"It's on to us." Briar told the computer with a glare.

Door takes one look at the AOL logon screen, opens her mouth, shuts her mouth, writes "I WOULD RATHER LOSE THAN LOG INTO AOL" on a sheet of paper, and hands it over to Abby.

"My logon time is forever," she says.
