Thanksgiving- The cafeteria- Thursday, 4 pm onwards

Once the food is cooked, it's time to set it out, and start yelling at people to get their butts down to dinner.

There's a full spread, complete with all the traditional Thanksgiving stuff. Turkey, sides, and all the fun dessert stuff will be brought out later. There's a cooler full of drinks (non-alcoholic, as hi, Jaye did invite the principal) and everything should be good. And if it isn't... eh. Deal.

"All anyone can ask, really," Jack said as he started loading a plate with food. "Anything in particular that takes your fancy?"

"Saying everything would help nothing, would it?" Cedric asked, shaking his head at himself. "The stuffing, I think. I can smell it from here."

"It does smell wonderful," he agreed, putting an extra big scoop on the plate, then showed it to Cedric. "Okay, I think that's everything I can reach. Will it do to start?"

"It'll do," he said, laughing. "You might have to roll me out of the cafeteria."

Laughing, he settled the plate in front of Cedric and filled a second for himself. "I'd offer to carry you, but I'm not sure I'll be able to walk," he said gleefully. "But we've only got to make it back to the dorms and up a couple of floors, then we can collapse and not move again. Ever."

"Ever," Cedric agreed. "Too bad I didn't bring my broom. If we both ended up not being able to move, I could've flown up us the stairs."

"If it'd even carry us after all this." Jack leaned over and brushed his shoulder against Cedric's. "And it's just us today - well, us and everyone else at the table - no Sam," he explained as he poked carefully at his plate. "She's sick."

"How sick?" Cedric asked, looking over. "Should she see a doctor?"

"It's just flu, nothing too serious. She just needs sleep and a bit of TLC. And I promised her leftovers for when she's feeling better." Jack pointed at the containers under his seat. "Have to fill those before we roll back to the dorms." He grinned. "But the upshot is you get me all to yourself."

Cedric might've blushed a little. "That's always a good thing. When you see her, tell her I hope she's well soon."

"I will," he promised, grinning wider at Cedric's blush. "So, do you have any idea what this whole Thanksgiving thing's in aid of? Not that I don't have plenty to be thankful for," and he pressed his knee against Cedric's under the table, "but this seems like a bigger deal than personal happiness."

"I...no." He frowned, eyebrows drawing together. "I don't. I didn't do any sort of research beforehand."

"And it never occurred to me to ask before now." Jack shrugged, and stated to tuck into his food. "Doesn't matter," he said when his mouth was empty. "The point of a celebration is to celebrate, and we can do that without knowing what it's for."

"Agreed," Cedric said, starting to eat as well. "I am thankful, though. For a great many things."

"I'm glad," he said with a smile for Cedric. "I like the idea of a day just to appreciate good things. It's," he paused, loaded fork halfway to his mouth, "it's too easy to take the good things for granted."

"It is," he said, nodding. "And, of course, it's nice to be able to eat free food. Call me shallow."

He smiled before eating more food.

"You're shallow," he said agreeably. "And it's not precisely free - I had to work for our suppers. I peeled a veritable mountain of potatoes, just so we wouldn't have to help with the cleanup."

"That's because you can't say no to a pretty face," Cedric teased.

Jack rolled his eyes at himself. "Depends on whose pretty face it is. Some people I just have no power to resist." He grumbled good naturedly under his breath as he speared a brussell sprout, "No idea how that happened."

"It's a good trait to have," Cedric told him, bumping his knee into Jack's. "Makes people trust you and come to you when they need help or just someone to talk to."

Jack looked at Cedric curiously. "Is that speculation or personal experience talking?"

"Experience, of course," he said. "You know I trust you. And you know more about me than anyone."

"I know," he replied, reaching over to squeeze Cedric's hand. "I guess I just suddenly wondered what prompted it. I mean, when you first got here. There's lots of good people here, so why'd you pick me? Not that I'm not irresistible," he added with a laugh.

"Pick?" Cedric shook his head. "I didn't so much pick as it just happened and it felt right and natural. It made me feel something more, being with you. I feel things with my friends, yes, but there was something...different? Unique? Something when I met you. Did it have to do with being shirtless at the time? Only partly."

"Shirtlessness is a great way to win friends and influence people," he said absently, the corner of his mouth quirked in a half smile. "But whatever the reason, however it happened, I'm glad I've got you, Cedric. I wouldn't trade you for anything." Jack looked down at his plate, then back up. "And apparently this large quantity of food is making me ridiculously sentimental. Sorry."
