Yomiko opened the library on time and, inspired by that crazy girl she'd met over the weekend, took several bartending guides off the shelf to read during the day. What bartending guides were doing in a high school library, she wasn't really sure. Some sort of research for papers on the dangers of underaged drinking, maybe?

"She will this spring," said Janet. "She's been busy with her band, so that doesn't leave much time for visiting the library. Not when you factor in time for doing homework and going to classes."

"Oh," Yomiko said. She couldn't think of anything else. She really was horrible at this social interaction business.

Luckily, Janet recognized people who were awful at social interaction. "So what brings you to Fandom?" she asked curiously as she leaned forward on the counter. "Because honestly, you seem so normal, and I can't imagine anyone normal taking this job."

"I was assigned here, actually," Yomiko said before she could wonder if that was letting too much slip. "I was glad, though. Substitute teaching is good and all, but it doesn't pay very regularly."

"Assigned?" Janet did her best to look innocent and seventeen, and not someone to whom 'assigned' meant 'the government said go here and they pay my salary so I do it and don't ask why.' "Really? I didn't know there was anyone that assigned teachers to Fandom. How's that work?"

"Well, I work part-time for the British Library," Yomiko hedged.

Why yes, she was from Japan.

"You know, I think Dr. Pierson said something like that too," said Janet, grinning cheerfully. "So what did you do at the British Library?"

"I work with rare books. Dr. Pierson was...the first librarian?" Yomiko had come across some rather sarcastic notes in his handwriting during her marathon cleaning-out of the office's desk.

"He was, yes," said Janet. "So, rare books, hm? That must be fun. Do you get stuck going into Special Collections a lot?"

"Special Collections?" asked Janet dubiously. "The most wonderful place in the world?" She wondered if fishing for her penlight would look suspicious.

"Oh, yes!" Yomiko said brightly. "There are books in there I've never even heard of!"

"Okay, I'll have to give you that part," said Janet. "The books in there are great. It's just that sometimes you're risking life and limb to get them."

"Really? I hadn't noticed," Yomiko said. She was the sort who would wander past a dragon with her nose still in a book.

"I'm not too surprised to hear that," said Janet, nodding. "You know, I think you and Dr. Jackson would get along amazingly well." Janet glanced at her watch and sighed. "I should probably get going, though. Too much studying to do, and while this is an ideal spot, all my books are back in my room."
