Library [11/09]

Rory bustled sleepily into the library with her laptop, coffee, and a special and very sleepy visitor in her bag.

She was hoping no one would really notice that last one.

"Not your fault," she mumbled.

Luke gave her another squeeze and pulled back. "I'll try," he said finally.

It was obvious how difficult it was for him to say that.

"It means everything," she said with a small sigh.

Vladdie made a distinct, 'omg you are ignoring meeeeeeeeeeee!' noise and pawed at Luke's leg.

Luke crouched down, eager for the distraction. "Hello, Vladdie," he cooed. "Why are you so clingy today?"

Vladdie licked his nose.

Luke laughed far harder than necessary. He'd been a little stressed, too.

Vladdie poked his forehead with his paw.

Luke picked Vladdie up and cuddled him. "Yoda doesn't let me do this," he told Rory.

"Yoda doesn't cuddle," she agreed. "He didn't let me, either."

Luke gave Vladdie another hug, then held him out for Rory to take. "I should let you get back to work," he said, eyes still looking a little troubled.

"Didn't you want a book?" she wondered, taking a squirmy Vladdie from him.

"Oh yeah," Luke said, blushing. "Any other suggestions on tactics?"

Rory bit her lip thoughtfully, and said, "I have another one I can recommend, and it's a little cynical and weird, but I guarantee Vader's read it. He's read Sun Tzu, after all."

"What's it called?" Luke asked.

"The Prince," Rory said, setting Vladdie down and moving over into the stacks. "It's by a man named Machiavelli."

Luke's forehead wrinkled in confusion. "But I don't want to be royalty. That's Leia's lookout."

"It's about tactics," Rory said. "Nicolo Machiavelli wrote about what one would do to get what they want - the end result justifies the means of getting there. Sound familiar? Like something our friend in black would say, right?"

"It really does," Luke said, nodding as he pulled the book from the shelf. "What was his topic today, anyway?"

"Immortality," she said. "How far you'd go to save yourself or a loved one from death."

Luke stared off into space, lost in memories for a long moment. "What did you say?" he finally asked.

"I don't want to live forever," she said. "As for saving someone I love...." She gave a little shrug. "If I had the means, I'd talk to them about it. It's not my choice."

Luke bit his lip. "He's an evil bastard," he said softly.

"He likes making me answer questions about him," Rory said, motioning for Luke to follow her back to the desk, where she hugged Vladdie close again and started to check out the book to Luke.

Luke took the book when she was finished and gave her what he was hoping was an encouraging smile.

It missed by quite a margin, but he was trying.

"See you around, Rory," he said.

Rory nodded with a teeny little smile. Vladdie gave a little yip and pawed towards Luke. "Vladdie says bye, too."
