Library [10/06]

Sam had coffee and lots of wholesome reading to do. In other words, he was more than ready to open the library.

"I'd be doing a lot better if I could yell at Barbossa and punch Alec in the face again," he said shortly. "But I'm okay. Dawn helped a lot last night by pointing out that everyone gets made fun of, and it's not just me."

"That's true. And hey, if Barbossa does it again, I bet you can get Dad to carry out his threat to castrate him."

"I can't believe Dad actually called in." Sam groaned. "I can't believe he was listening at all, and heard that!"

"Yeah, not exactly what I pictured as Dad's choice for easy listening," Dean admitted. "But hey, he cared enough to come to your defense."

Sam shrugged. "He was probably just embarrassed on his own behalf, to hear the family name being thrown around with insults to manhood like that."

Dean rolled his eyes. "What does the man have to do to make you believe he cares anyway?"

That question caught Sam a bit off guard, and all he could do was shrug. "I know he cares," he muttered.

"Do you? Because you don't act like it."

"Well he doesn't always act like it either," Sam replied defensively.

Dean stared at him.

"What? He doesn't," Sam said, staring back.

Dean shook his head. "Y'know, I never knew you were that willfully blind."

"I'm not blind, Dean. You just don't notice everything that goes on between me and Dad."

"I think I should be saying that to you," Dean told him bluntly. "Because dude, if you can think Dad doesn't care for you..."

"I told you, I know he does," Sam replied. "Just not as much at some times than as others."

"Maybe you think so because you blow it off when he does show you," Dean said. "Like you think he couldn't possibly be defending you yesterday on the radio. When it sure sounded to me like that was exactly what he was doing."

Sam glanced down at his book, unwilling to give Dean a look that would let him know he'd made a good point. "I don't know why he did that. He didn't need to call and scare Barbossa."

"He did it for the same reason I'm going to deal with Alec later. No one makes fun of you." Dean paused and smiled a little. "'Cept me."

Sam gave Dean a curious look. "You're going to 'deal' with Alec?"

"What, you thought I was going to let him get away with that just because we're having sex?"

"I thought you were going to let him get away with it because it's Alec, and it's his idea of a joke."

"Hey, I've always called Alec on his crap," Dean told him. "Especially when it comes to you." He sighed. "Gotta admit, he's not really proving to be a fast learner here."

"He's really not," Sam agreed. "And I know that you've called him on this stuff before. But that was before the two of you started...you know."

"Sex doesn't actually make me deaf, blind and stupid," Dean told him.

Sam frowned deeply. "I didn't say that. I just meant that the situation between you and Alec has changed, so I've been expecting the way you deal with him and me to change too."
