Music is Love: [9/26] Period 7

As the students come into the classroom they'll see that Lorne is on the stage fiddling with the karaoke machine.

"Hey kittens! Sorry about class last week," Lorne said once everyone had settled in.

Today we're going to talk about how music is used for various purposes. For instance:

Hot dogs! Armor Hot dogs!
What kind of kid likes armor Hotdogs?
Big kids, little kids, kids who climb on rocks!
Fat kids, skinny kids, even kids with chicken pox like hotdogs!
Armor hotdogs! The dogs kids love to bite!

Or another example and my personal favorite...

I've been really tryin', baby
Tryin' to hold back this feelin' for so long
And if you feel like I feel, baby
Then come on, oh, come on
Whoo, let's get it on
Ah, babe, let's get it on
Let's love, baby
Let's get it on, sugar
Let's get it on
Whoo-ooh-ooh

We're all sensitive people
With so much to give
Understand me, sugar
Since we got to be
Let's live
I love you

There's nothin' wrong
With me lovin' you
Baby, no, no
And givin' yourself to me can never be wrong
If the love is true
Oh, babe, ooh, ooh

Don't you know
How sweet and wonderful life can be?
Whoo-ooh
I'm askin' you, baby
To get it on with me
Ooh, ooh, ooh

I ain't gonna worry, I ain't gonna push
Won't push you, baby
So come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, baby
Stop beatin' 'round the bush, hey

Let's get it on, ooh, ooh
Let's get it on
You know what I'm talkin' 'bout
Come on, baby, hey, hey
Let your love come out
If you believe in love
Let's get it on, ooh, ooh
Let's get it on, baby
This minute, oh yeah
Let's get it on

Here we have two different uses of music. One is about getting people to buy meat that no decent person would put in their mouth if they knew what was in it and the other is about making sweeeeeet love to someone..."

Lorne paused for moment remembering his audience and then added:

"After saving themselves for marriage."

"Your assignment today is to sing us a song and tell us how it can be used. Whether it be spiritual, commercial, emotional or something else we're not aware of. Hop to it kittens. Show me what you got."

What rolls down stairs,
Alone or in pairs,
Rolls over your neighbor's dog,
What's great for a snack and fits on your back?
It's log, log, log.
It's lo-og, lo-og,
It's big, it's heavy, it's wood,
It's lo-og, lo-og,
It's better than bad, it's good!
Everyone wants a log,
You're gonna love it, log,
Come on and get your log,
Everyone needs a log,
Yes, it's log, log, log.

"Log. From Blammo." Nadia smiled, a little embarrassed. "That's another advertising song. But it sticks in your head really well, and these days, I think I use it more just to see who else sings along and remembers the old jingle. It's sort of a bonding thing."

There was a pause, then Nadia continued.

"I could sing the song for the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen, too,"

"Um, probably not."

"Um, okay," and blushing furiously, she did.

"We used to sneak into places to watch foreign TV when I lived on the streets."

Chad never really liked singing much, so he picked something simple, quick, but also that had a meaning easily explained. He sang a Mexican lullaby (http://www.songsforteaching.com/sarajordan/duermeteminino.htm), one he vaguely remembered his mother singing, though, with his very deep voice, it almost sounded more like dirge:

Duérmete mi niño.
Duérmete solito.
Qué cuando te despiertes,
Te daré atolito.

Duérmete mi niño.
Duérmete mi sol.
Duérmete pedazo,
De mi corazón.

"It's a traditional lullaby," he explained when he finished. "Used to calm and comfort children. Or to just get them to fall asleep."

Lorne wouldn't read her without permission anyway, but just to make sure, Parker goes with her selection for maximum masking of emotion.

Allons enfants de la Patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé!
Contre nous de la tyrannie
L'étendard sanglant est levé
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
Mugir ces feroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras
Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes!

Aux armes, citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons!
Marchons, marchons!
Qu'un sang
Abreuve nos sillons!

Que veut cette horde d'esclaves,
De traîtres, de rois conjurés?
Pour qui ces ignobles entraves
Ces fers dès longtemps préparés?
Français, pour nous, ah! Quel outrage,
Quels transports il doit exciter!
C'est nous qu'on ose méditer
De rendre à l'antique esclavage!

"La Marseillaise. Advertising song for revolution, really, all aboubt people getting their throats cut and blood soaking the fields and now we must take up arms to fight the foe. It was also the song for most international revolutionary movements for a while there; the Russians used it to. Oh, and it was a resistance song during World War II." Parker cocked her head. "Pretty much used to stir up fighting feelings and 'a bas les aristos' and the like."

For some reason, this was the first thing that came to Zero's mind, so she was going with it.

Follow the drinking gourd!
Follow the drinking gourd.
For the old man is awaiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the drinking gourd.

When the sun comes back and the first quail calls,
Follow the drinking gourd,
For the old man is awaiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the drinking gourd.

The riverbank makes a very good road,
The dead trees will show you the way,
Left foot, peg foot traveling on,
Following the drinking gourd.

The river ends between two hills,
Follow the drinking gourd,
There's another river on the other side,
Follow the drinking gourd.

Where the great big river meets the little river,
Follow the drinking gourd,
The old man is awaiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the drinking gourd.

"This song was used by the Underground Railroad before the Civil War to tell runaway slaves how to get north across the Ohio River by following the Little Dipper. It's an instructional song."

((I just finished reading a slave narrative for class and the song's stuck in my head. I blame that one episode of Reading Rainbow.))

Music as torture. It wasn't so hard and Zuko remembered the song Bel had performed in the common room.

Kumbaya my lord, kumbaya
Kumbaya my lord, kumbaya
Kumbaya my lord, kumbaya
Oh lord, kumbaya

Someones singing lord, kumbaya
Someones singing lord, kumbaya
Someones singing lord, kumbaya
Oh lord, kumbayah

Someones laughing, lord, kumbaya...

That's where he broke off because he'd walked out of the common room then.

"Music as torture," he explained. "For torturing people."

The reply should have been predictable. "No."

Pip got up, cleared his throat, and launched into a parade march.

I don't know but I've been told!
Eskimo
crackle-hisss is mighty cold!

It tastes good!

Mighty good!

He frowned at the microphone and shrugged. "Anyway, that's a marching song. Suitable for training millitary recruits and getting them to march. You might want to check this mic, though."

For some reason, the first thing Marie thinks of is church songs.

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear,
And Grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come.
'Tis Grace hath brought me safe thus far
And Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His Word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.

When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we'd first begun.

"Songs can be used as a form of religious worship," she said after she finished.

I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
'cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

CHORUS

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong

FADE
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

Once she finished this slightly rhythmically impaired rendition, she leaned forward over the microphone and explained, "It's an anthem. It was a call to arms for the women's movement, and for feminists. It made women realize that they could be whatever they wanted."
