Criminal Justice [first period, Tuesday]

"Good morning," V said smoothly. "As we have been studying, our current judicial systems are rather rigorous in most cultures. However, they are, in many ways, an improvement. There are, for instance, governments that employ secret police, or have employed them in the past. These organizations rely heavily on fear - and people should not fear their governments. Governments, rather, should be afraid of their people."

"And one reason why," he said, pacing slightly as he picked up some papers to pass out, "is because of what is commonly known as the mob mentality. Years ago, it was the way justice was carried out, and even to this day, public outcry can sway an entire nation. Sometimes not for the best."

He started to pass out a pair of handouts, as well as a small card on each desk. "Today we are going to study one of the less productive, yet nonetheless historical, means of exacting justice. Three of you are 'witches' - your cards have a 'W.' The rest, you have a blank card. Your jobs are to accuse one another until you locate what you believe to be a witch, and bring him or her before me, as I am the acting judge. If you have enough evidence and have located one of the actual 'witches,' you will be awarded with one of these." V held up a box of cookies.

"And witches," he added, scanning the room. "You must do your best to blend in and deflect attention away from yourselves."

[Okay, so basically, this is a game of he-said, she-said. You say, "So and so is a witch for this reason!" And people can hop on your bandwagon, or the accused can reply. When you've gone through a reasonable amount of that, ping in the "Trials" thread and V will listen to the reasoning and give out cookies if you have one of the three "witches."

There are three people who have OOCly been contacted and asked to be "witches": [livejournal.com profile] x5_alec, [livejournal.com profile] once_a_king, and [livejournal.com profile] bridge_carson. Naturally, your characters have no way of knowing this, so accuse whoever. And your logic for why they're a witch can be anything. I expect crack and silliness, not meanness, please. And work together, of course! I'll be around most of the day, with small patches of AFKness in the middle of the day.]

"Peter Pevensie is a witch," Seely stated.

Peter rolled his eyes. "Come up with a new song, Booth. This one's getting old."

"He doesn't deny it!"

"Clearly you're just trying to deflect attention from yourself," Bridge says, narrowing his eyes thoughtfully at Seely.

"Please, if I wanted to deflect attention from myself, I would not be standing in front of you saying this," Seely said. "I'm also not the one who turned myself into a werepony, nor am I the one dating a confessed witch."

"Actually, wouldn't a witch know how to stop themselves from getting turned into a werepony?" Jack asked reasonably. "So if he was a werepony, he probably isn't a witch."

"Unless he's just not a very good one," Alec pointed out, grinning slightly.

"True," Jack conceded, flashing a grin first at Alec and then at Peter. "Maybe he's just an incompetent witch?"

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] socksofcool.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe," Seely replied. "But consider this, assuming the form of a pony enabled him to enact acts of violence upon fellow students without being punished."

[identity profile] x5-alec.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Alec snickered. "Most people know better than to piss off things with sharp teeth. But what about you, Seely? Maybe he's not the witch - maybe you're the one who turned him into a pony in the first place."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] socksofcool.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
"His attacks upon my person were unprovoked," Seely said. "And in the case, I could turn him into something, which for the record I cannot as I am not a witch, a pony would not be my chosen object."

"Perfect way to throw someone off the trail, if you ask me," Alec said, narrowing his eyes.

"An unprovoked attack against me?" Seely asked. "Seems to me to be a clear case of blaming the victim, or maybe he's placed you under a spell."

[personal profile] multiplez 2006-09-26 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
"What evidence do we have that his attacks against you were unprovoked?" Z asked. "Your obsession with him might just be enough annoyance to warrant it."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] socksofcool.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
"He attacked me the very first time we met, I hadn't had time to provoke him," Seely replied. "You will notice that he has failed to address any of my points of evidence."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Because you're not giving points of evidence," Peter replied. "You're merely going through the same tired routine. And for the record the first time we met, the 'attack' was well-provoked by the fact you assaulted and greatly upset a lady. That's not exactly the way to avoid duels."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] socksofcool.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"No points of evidence, he says," Seely chuckled. "Point of evidence one, the accused, Peter Pevensie, is dating one Willow Rosenberg, who has stated on more than one occasion, in public I might add, that she is a witch, this is a matter of public record. Point of evidence two, also a matter of public record, the accused has spent time in the form of a beast, a pony, to be exact. While in this form he has assaulted other members of the student body, risking the transmission of the curse of wereponyism to other students."

"As for my avoiding duels...Leaving aside the fact that I have never, in my entire life, assaulted a lady, coming up behind someone and biting them on the leg without warning whilst wearing the form of an animal is not a duel, nor is it the act of an honourable man, no, my friends, that is the act of a witch."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"For the first, until you plan to bring guilt by association back out of the Middle Ages, the question of Willow's status is out of the purview of this court," Peter replied. "For the second, if you consider the normal Fandom habit of randomly turning into an animal proof of witchery, then ought you not be accusing Pip, Greg, Logan, Bridge, and Zero as well?" Peter shook his head sadly. "Instead you're letting your personal feelings influence you by trying to pin the blame on someone you already have some sort of vendetta against."

"I have never attacked someone from behind in my life. From a low angle perhaps as it my only option when I was a horse, but never from behind. Insulting my honour is merely a cheap trick and not worthy of any type of man."

"You know what they say about birds of a feather, Petey, besides this whole class is out of the dark ages," Seely replied, before going back to mimicking the many proscuters he'd seen when Dad had dragged him to and Jared along when giving evidence in court. "Considering the closeness of your association, Miss Rosenberg's status as a witch is very relevant to the case at hand, after all, all witches must learn somewhere. Speaking of associations, I expect that next you'll claim never to have held converse with beasts of the field, or creatures such as satyrs."

"You bring up the other animal transformations, I might add that there is no record of the aforementioned viciously attacking their classmates whilst in animal form," Seely said. "As for your claim of never attacking from behind, considering all the bite marks were on the backs of my legs, which I have witnesses for, you might be hard pressed to back that up."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Y'know," Dean said slowly, "with all the animal transformations that happen around here, it's probably someone who doesn't change when there's a good reason they should've that's the witch. Like, say, getting bit by a werepony?"

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] socksofcool.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"True enough," Seely said. "However you will note that after the attck upon my person, I sought advice and help from an expert in this field. One Mr John Winchester."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"An attempt to cover your tracks," Dean replied immediately.

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] socksofcool.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Arguably, it could be seen that way," Seely replied in turn. "However if you wish to bring in Mr Winchester to give his expert opinion on wereponies and the liklihood of the curse being transmitted, by all means do so, I have nothing to hide."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Certainly, bring him in," Peter said immediately. "We can also ask his opinion on if random transformations are proof of witchery."

Re: S/he's a witch!

[identity profile] socksofcool.livejournal.com 2006-09-26 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"But was it really so random as you claim?"
