Library [09/22]

Sam was feeling only a little nervous as he headed over to open the library for the first time. Luckily, being surrounded by books did a lot to help him relax.

"Faith, of course," Dawn said, rolling her eyes, "Xander wanted me to move to Africa and Willow suggested an Eskimo coat."

"Okay, from now on, listen to Faith, and ignore Xander and Willow. Unless it's cold outside, and there's a blizzard, in which case, Willow's advice works."

Dawn snorted. "This is she who sent me the ginormous box of condoms when I was dating Dean. Still want me to listen?"

Sam's eyes widened a little and he shook his head. "Uh, on second thought, maybe you should be selective about what advice of hers to follow."

Dawn nodded smugly. "Yeah, I thought you might change your mind." Not that she didn't have leather pants in her closet...

"Only about some of that. The black leather...did I mention that that's a good thing? Is mentioning that that's a good thing going to get me in trouble?" he asked. "Because I can keep that to myself if it will."

"You may have mentioned it a few times, yes," Dawn said, giggling, "and you don't have to keep it to yourself--it's not like you're talking about it all the time."

She paused and glanced up at him. "You're not going to be talking about it all the time, are you?"

Sam shook his head quickly to reassure Dawn. "No, I'm not, because despite having the same last name, I'm not Dean, and I'm perfectly capable of behaving myself and not talking about this sort of thing all the time." Of course, that didn't mean he wouldn't think about it occassionally, but she didn't need to know that.

"Yay," she squeezed him. "And I know you're not Dean. Not that there's anything wrong with Dean other than the fact that he's dating Alec, but he's not you."

"It's kind of funny how many people have failed to realize that in the past," he said, grinning at the squeeze.

"Huh? You're a lot alike, but it's not like you're identical."

"I know that. But if we meet people through our dad, and they don't know us very well, sometimes they assume that Dean and I are exactly alike, and just like our dad."

"Well, I know you're not." She hugged him again, getting used to his height, especially when it meant she could hear his heart beating when they were close like this. "You and Dean are alike--in some ways. And I guess you get that from your dad, because where else would you get it? Buffy and I couldn't be more different, from each other or our mom."

"My dad says there's a lot of my mom in Dean, which I just have to take his word for, but I can see how that would be true," he said, putting his arms around her a little tighter.

"Are you sorry that he doesn't say that you're like her?"

"I don't know," Sam replied honestly. "I mean, I only know my mother through the stories Dean and my dad tell about her. In all honesty, Dean probably is more like her, because he's the patient one." Sam snickered at that thought. "I think maybe I'd be more sorry if I knew more about her."

"I'm still having issues with Dean being the patient one," Dawn snickered, "It's just wrong. Maybe it's impatient and slightly less impatient?"

"It's awful that you didn't get the chance to know her better. I wi..." She stopped mid-wish, just in case. "I'm sorry."

Sam laughed. "However you want to define it, Dean's definitely more patient than me. Neither of us has a great deal of patience, but...maybe that's from our dad."

"And hey, it's okay. You don't have to be sorry," he added. "I mean, it's not like I wouldn't change things if I could, but I can't."

Dawn glanced over at the clock, not sure what she could say that wouldn't involve a discussion of D'Hoffryn and why wishes were bad, even if they worked. "Lunch is almost over. I think I'm going to go into town to say hi to Giles, since the radio said he's back. Need anything?"

Sam thought about it for a minute before shaking his head. "No. I think I've got all the books I need here," he teased, "and I don't need anything else in town. But thank you for asking." Smiling, he leaned in to give her one last kiss. "And I'm really glad you came by."

Dawn stretched up to kiss Sam properly. "Me too."
