"Good afternoon, class!" Ms Frizzle trilled as she flounced into class, standing en pointe for a moment before clapping her hands together. Today's ensemble involved a lemon-yellow dress covered in lightbulbs and glowing filaments, with matching earrings and shoes. "I am so excited about all your wonderful ideas about the science fair that you came up with the last class! Today I thought we'd talk about all the different things you can do with science -"

Suddenly, all the lights went off in the classroom.

"Oh, shoot! Liz!" Ms Frizzle called. There was a scrabble of claws and the sound of drawers being opened and closed. "Now where's that flashlight . . ." Ms Frizzle muttered to herself. "A ha! Here it is!"

The flashlight flicked on - illuminating the gigantic gremlin silhouetted against one wall of the classroom!

The classroom lights come on to reveal Liz hanging precariously from the light switch and the gremlin disappeared. Miss Frizzle straightened, turning off the flashlight, and laughed at the small gremlin bouncing on its spring in the top drawer of her lab bench. "This gives me a wonderful idea!" she crowed as her earrings began to glow and she headed for the window, leaning out and giving a sharp whistle. "Everyone to the bus!"

Today's lesson is brought to you by The Magic School Bus Gets a Bright Idea. Sorry there's no Pepper's Ghost (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper's_ghost), but to be honest, I can't understand how it works myself or how to explain it to others.

*pat pat* We don't need a ghost to make science-exclaimation-point fun! It's all in the... yelling! AH! MORE EXCLAIMATION! I need to watch the interjections school house rock song now..

They use that trick at the La Brea Tar Pits to morph a skeleton of a woman found in the tar with a manakin that (theoretically) was made to look like the woman when she was alive.

Same kind of thing at the Jorvik Viking Centre in York. Lots of places use the Pepper's Ghost trick.

Oh yeah huh! The Jorvik Center is way better then the La Brea Tar Pits... It's got a dark ride!

It was so much fun! With the dorky time machine and time cars and the animatronic chickens and the occupied lavatory?

Nothing says "History" like animatronic chickens!

How small is smallish? As in, is the bus smaller than they (hence Miss Frizzle's jumping) or is smallish meaning, like, short-bus sized?

Er, short-bus sized. Use your imagination?
