"Good afternoon, class!" Ms Frizzle trilled as she flounced into class, standing en pointe for a moment before clapping her hands together. Today's ensemble involved a lemon-yellow dress covered in lightbulbs and glowing filaments, with matching earrings and shoes. "I am so excited about all your wonderful ideas about the science fair that you came up with the last class! Today I thought we'd talk about all the different things you can do with science -"

Suddenly, all the lights went off in the classroom.

"Oh, shoot! Liz!" Ms Frizzle called. There was a scrabble of claws and the sound of drawers being opened and closed. "Now where's that flashlight . . ." Ms Frizzle muttered to herself. "A ha! Here it is!"

The flashlight flicked on - illuminating the gigantic gremlin silhouetted against one wall of the classroom!

The classroom lights come on to reveal Liz hanging precariously from the light switch and the gremlin disappeared. Miss Frizzle straightened, turning off the flashlight, and laughed at the small gremlin bouncing on its spring in the top drawer of her lab bench. "This gives me a wonderful idea!" she crowed as her earrings began to glow and she headed for the window, leaning out and giving a sharp whistle. "Everyone to the bus!"

Students will see what seems to be a smallish yellow school bus with a gigantic lightbulb and funnel attached to the top of it. Ms. Frizzle turned to her students with a grin. "It's time for a bit of a field trip, class! It's time to takes chances! Make mistakes! And get . . . illuminated!"

Without a backwards look and with a cry of "WAHOO!", Ms. Frizzle jumped into the funnel, disappearing completely. A beam of light shot from the lightbulb and a moment later Ms. Frizzle was standing by a tree outside, waving her arms for the class to follow

[[When you jump into the funnel, you become a photon for one millionth of a second and shoot out in all directions, only turning back into a person when you hit something.

If someone ~~can come up with a reason why they~~ would hit a mirror, please do, as you will bounce off the mirror and keep going until you hit something.

People aiming for windows or glass will land inside the room once they hit the opposite wall and can be rescued by the bus.]]

"But now, class! You've seen how light moves normally, but what if, like the flashlight, we need to direct it in one particular direction? For example, into the classroom?"

"Now do you understand a little better how light works and what caused the shadow of the gremlin? Oh, there's just so many wonderful things about photons and waves and -" BRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING! "There goes the bell! See you next week, class!"

They use that trick at the La Brea Tar Pits to morph a skeleton of a woman found in the tar with a manakin that (theoretically) was made to look like the woman when she was alive.

Tyler closed his eyes and jumped.

It felt ... fizzy.

Somewhere deep, deep down inside of Chad is the same excited squeal announced by Pippi. He had trouble even remembering the last fieldtrip he'd been on. He just has a different way of expressing his excitement. By grunting.

Naomi hadn't been on a field trip related to school work before and thus she was very excited by the prospect of going on one.

Naomi was a little bit nervous about jumping so she took a deep breath and then jumped.

Molly jumped out the window. "WHEEEE!" She yelled as she slid down the funnel.

She was still yelling it when she reappeared on the ground below.

Chad didn't so much as jump into the funnel as he did drop.

He was scratching the back of his head thoughtfully when he reappeared.
