Ethics (September 14, 6th period)

If the classroom looked a bit like a discount Swedish furniture store had exploded inside of it, well...at least the projectiles were now easily replaceable.

Which might be a good thing.

Precisely on time, Darth Vader swept into the room and slammed the door firmly behind him.

"Today we talk about lying," he said, his masked face scanning the faces in front of him as he prowled around the classroom.

"Everyone lies," he stated flatly. "To hide things, to manipulate others, to avoid...unpleasantness." There was a definite hint of scorn in his voice at that last example. "In class today, you are required to pair up and only tell the truth." His cape whirled behind him. "And I can tell if you are not. Such disobedience will result in detention."

He paused for a moment. "And I don't believe in that axiom where if you cannot say something nice, you don't say anything at all. I do not require you to be nice. I require you to be honest."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "Name. Place of birth. Classes you are taking," he barked out. "Proceed from there."

"Well...if you ever find another one, I'll be happy to help." Sam grinned at Isabel, then teased, "I'm glad he likes it. Because you know he is the hair guru. And it's a date."

"Thanks Sam, I appreciate it." The blush deepened a bit. "He does have a bit a a fixation. But it's fun. Although one of these days I'm going to steal all his gel again. It was fun watching him panic without it after it got all used up the weekend of singing and dancing."

It was Sam's turn to blush now. "I'm so very, very sorry about that and probably owe him some gel. Holy hannah, I didn't mess up being a teenager so bad the first time."

"Oh don't worry about it. I thought it was funny as hell," Isabel grinned. "English Peter tried to ask me out to the drive-in. And for the record, you weren't a teenager in Fandom the last time."

"Technically, I'm not a teenager in Fandom this time, either," Sam said dryly.

"Bah, minor point. You're in a teenaged body. You have teenaged hormones," she said. "That's all that matters."

"Yeah, the hormones are definitely teenaged," Sam said with a roll of her eyes. "Either that, or Jack Harkness is human catnip. It's almost ridiculous. Plus we do better together if we don't talk."

"Jack as human catnip. I can see that," she grinned. "What happens when you talk?"

"Generally, one of us will say something that makes the other of us realize that we're more emotionally involved than we meant to be, and have to struggle not to run out of the room, screaming in terror. Or maybe that's just me."

"Nah, it's not just you. He's not used to be emotionally involved," Isabel said quietly. "I think it terrifies him at times, he just covers it up with a smile and some flirting."

Sam kept her expression carefully blank. "I told him I loved him, and I wasn't sure either one of us were going to survive the experience. He was so surprised he couldn't even flirt. It got better once I explained about not having to return it, though."

"Oh Sam." Isabel thought for a moment, remembering how Jack had reacted the first time she'd said she loved him. And their relationship was simple compared to the complex relationship he had with Sam and Cedric. "I don't know though, from what I've seen, Jack uses flirting as a defense when he's trying to hide something. If he stopped flirting maybe he wasn't hiding."

"Anyway, I think there was almost a race for the door, since I was as surprised as he was," She smiled slightly, "We got through it, but I don't think it's usually a reason for a couple to break up, and we almost did."

"It's not fun when things just slip out like that," Isabel nodded. "I'm glad you did get through it though. It would be a hell of a reason for a break up. I think there would have been a line of people looking to thwap both of you for being ridiculous."

"...a line?"

"A line," she nodded. "I would have been at the head of it. You're good for each other. And admitting that you care about him, hell, even that you love him, is no reason to go running for the hills."

"It doesn't tend to end well. For me, or for them."

"You've said that a few times," Isabel said. "But maybe you need to look at this as a second chance in more ways then one." Unforutnately Isabel did have to agree with her as far as Sam's future with Jack went. Unless she got a job with the Time Agency it was doubtful that she'd ever see him again.

"You're an optimist," Sam smiled at her, "and I'll give it my best shot." She wasn't expecting forever from Jack, but hopefully their relationship wouldn't end because he died. That was enough.

"I guess I am," she said, surprised. "Which is odd, because usually I'm pretty pragmatic. But I guess I just like to see my friends happy."

Sam smiled wider, almost goofily, especially for Sam. "Well, you can cross me off your worry list. And hopefully Jack and Cedric."

"Oh I've got all three of you crossed off," Isabel grinned. "Jack seems to be deliriously happy, especially now that he knows what happened while he was gone. And Cedric seemed cheerful when I dragged him to get his haircut last week."

"You dragged Cedric off to get a haircut?" Sam laughed.

"He looked like a sheepdog!"

Sam blew her bangs out of her eyes. "Yeah, I know how that goes."
