Intro to Magic, 5th Period (Week 2: 9/13/06)

Jenny has coffee for anyone that wants it, and a steaming mug of it seems to be perpetually attached to her hand. It's a good thing she's got a cover on it, as she's always gesturing as she talks.

"Please sign in. You know the drill, right? Today, we're going to be talking about how to raise magical energy. Some good ways? Music and dance. I've got a bunch of different instruments out. Or you could sing. Chant if you can't hold a tune to save your life. There's also meditation, but that's a lot less-- What's the word I'm thinking of? Oh, yeah. Fun.

I've got a few handouts, like this one on what magical energy is.

~~I know, I know, it's Llewyellyn. But it works for this class.~~ Also, got some handouts on drumming for you, because if you've never been in a drum circle? Well, let's just say it's an experience.

So. Play music. Sing, chant, dance. Raise energy a different way. Sakura, does playing cards work for you? Or if you're not the performing type, talk about the handouts and ask any questions you've got. Works?"

Course Syllabus & Roster

OOC: Mod your own instrument, if you want one. Suggestions are drums, tambourines, triangles, finger cymbals, ocarinas, recorders--anything easy to play. Also, I do not have gmail access during the day, so it's best to ping me in the OOC thread for this course if you need anything. If you need something private, head over to Jenny's voice mail, as all comments there are screened.

Lana listened to some of the music and quietly chanted along.

"Enjoying yourself?" asked Jenny quietly, if Lana looked like she was going to take a break.

"It's fun," Lana said with a smile. "I didn't really know how I'd feel about it, but it's nice. I'm not sure I feel any energy gathering, but I'm enjoying it."

"The enjoyment is more the point anyway," said Jenny. "At least in this class. Any instruments you're fond of?"

Lana made a little face. "For listening to, sure. For making music with..." She shook her head. "I can sing, but pretty much anything else is beyond me."

"You should give it a try," said Jenny. "I brought out the easy stuff, after all."

Music? Not a way Alphonse would've ever expected to raise, well... just about any sort of energy, magical ones included. He took one of the triangles and began fiddling with that, probably making more noise than music, wondering the whole way through how the heck this stuff was supposed to work.

When Edward was done skimming the handout, he folded it into a paper airplane and sailed it at Alphonse's head.

Alphonse watched the paper airplane drift by, then looked over his shoulder and gave Edward a look, then rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Don't complain if you need that later."

Edward rolled his eyes. "If I need it I can always steal your copy."

"How do you know I won't loose it by then?"

"I, uh..." Edward shrugged. "I was assuming you wouldn't. I thought you were the responsible one in this outfit, and I'm the happy-go-lucky loose cannon?"

"Having fun?" asked Jenny

"It's a little, um, strange," Alphonse admitted. "I really have no idea how this is supposed to work."

"Mostly, you should be having fun," said Jenny, grinning. "If you don't feel the energy building, don't worry about it."

"Okay," Alphonse said, smiling a bit sheepishly. With that assurance he began playing the triangle with a little more interest. "I will then. I never have gotten to try musical instruments anyway."

Edward comandeered a cup of coffee and a drum, finding a seat on the ground. Magical energy, huh? He still hadn't figured out the difference between that and the energy harnessed for alchemy, so he settled for drumming irregularly on the drum with his good hand and scanning over the hand-out.

"You get a better rhythm if you use both hands," said Jenny, grinning.

OOC: Now with the right login...

Edward shrugged. "I don't have quite the dexterity in my other hand," he said, drumming halfheartedly with his left fingers. "I'm not very good with instruments."

"Oh," said Jenny, covering her mouth with one hand. "My bad. So am I touching on a sore topic? Because if so? Sorry."

"Sore? Not particularly so. Just a fact of life anymore." Edward shrugged at her. "I'm just not very good with music, or instruments. The automail just makes things interesting."

Sakura made a funny little face at Jenny's mention of her cards, and her hand subconsciously went to the pocket of her bag she kept them in. "...eh, it's not exactly playing cards..." she said, extracting them. "More... controlling their spirits." Well, now that everyone listening thought she was insane... She tapped the charm on her choker. "...It's not exactly music or dance, but I suppose I could give an example if you thought it'd help." Meek, Sakura? Nahhh.

Weiss dug the music well enough, but he wasn't getting it. What was this all supposed to do?

Jude had actually done the drumming circle thing before. Granted, it had been in the middle of a shopping mall with his ex-girlfriend and her hippie-Vegan-neo-pagan friends and he had been doing it more to irritate a certain rent-a-cop than to raise magical energy, but hey, he'd try anything once.

Eyes closed, lanky frame swaying slightly to the beat, he drummed his little heart out.
