World History in a Nutshell

The classroom is dimly lit and there's a projecter set up to a laptop.

"Good morning," says Daniel, beaming all around. "Today, we're going to be touching on Ancient Egypt. There's packets on your desks with information about mummies and health and --" His face clouded and he frowned slightly. "gods. You can look at all that in your leisure, but first, I'm going to talk to you a bit about my dig in Egypt this summer."

Daniel has a power point presentation and everything which would have been done had the mun not fallen asleep yesterday. It's mostly pictures of sand. And more sand. And yes, you guessed it, sand. Daniel's highly enthusiastic about it, however, as he babbles on quite happily for half the lecture.

"Okay, for the second half, I apologize to those of you who aren't used to computers and also to those who took Egyptian archaeology last year, as you'll have already played a couple of these games. There's a choice of three to play, so have fun and talk to me if you have any questions or need a hand."

Build a pyramid

Make a Mummy

Death in Sakkara

[[ooc: Huge apologies for this being so late up; work and calling schools got in the way this morning and I wasn't at all functional last night to get it up then like I was planning]]

Once she saw the nature of today's lecture, she immediately sat near Evie. She wasn't adverse to taking advantage of other people's expertise.

Dean turned around, about halfway through the lecture, having taken sporadic and uncertain notes at best. He mouthed "Help!" at Lyra, a look of mock-horror on his face.

Lyra grinned at his stricken look. She mouthed back, "Just write 'sand' a lot."

Dean scrawled "SAND!!!!" on a fresh page in his notebook, holding it up for Lyra as discretely as possible.

Lyra muffled her giggles with her hand, biting her lip to keep from laughing. Getting herself calmed, she pointed over at Evie's notes, nodding knowingly. She scribbled on her notebook for a second before holding up a sign to him that said, "Study group?!"

Dean wrote "YES PLZ!" in big block letters under the particularly enthusiastic "SAND!!!!" on the same page. Of course, the whole thing now looked like it said "SAND: YES PLZ!!!!!", but he figured Lyra would get it.

Still biting her lip, Lyra scribbled again on her notebook, taking care to cross out her previous message. She held it up again for Dean to read.

Study group?!
I'll get you some for Christmas.

Lest he think she wasn't kidding though, she leaned over to Evie and started chatting with her, careful to watch for any new notes.

Dean flipped over the new page he'd just written on to Evie, re-using it for Lyra. "HA. HA. :|" He smiled genuinely when he lifted it up, though, his unimpressed smiley face belying his amusement.

Lyra contemplated sticking her tongue out at him, but was in the middle of a question, so didn't. Pan grabbed her pen in his mouth and wrote a very shaky note back:

vEry FUnNy.

Dean had no such compunction, and actually did stick his tongue out at Pan. He winked too, though, just in case pine martens were easily offended or anything.

Pan chittered in something that could have been a laugh, which made Lyra turn back at stare at him. He hadn't done that in a long time. She caught sight of Dean sticking his tongue out at her daemon, and grinned.

Waving, she held up the sign that said "studygroup?!" and pointed at it, nodding emphatically.

"Hello, Lyra!" Evie whispered, pleased to see her. "How was your weekend?"

"Good. This is your specialty, right?" Lyra asked quietly.

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, although some of this information is new to me too," Evie said back, keeping her voice down. "The comparison of cultures is fascinating. I suppose similar environments produce similar practices. Although one has to wonder...."

Re: Daniel's lecture

[identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
"What? One wonders what?" Lyra was interested in the speculation she heard in Evie's voice.

Re: Daniel's lecture

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
"It's just that since coming here, I wonder if, oh, magic could account for the similarities. Or if the stories of magic carpets are real, and someone years ago took a trip from Machu Picchu to Thebes. Or vice versa." She bit her lip, thinking. "Do you think it's likely?"

Re: Daniel's lecture

[identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Honestly? I have no idea. In my world, it's only witches what have magic, and they all live in the North. Dr Jackson might know, though." She smiled at Evie, and then looked over your shoulder at Dean.

"Hey, how'd you feel about making a study group: you, me, Dean, and maybe anyone else who wants?"

Re: Daniel's lecture

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
"That would be briliant," Evie enthused as quietly as she could, nodding happily. "Dean just asked for help, and of course, anything I can do, it would be no problem."

Re: Daniel's lecture

[identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
"That'd be awfully good of you. I'm finding it hard to weed out the things we ought to know from the sand enthusiasm." Lyra grinned.

"I'll bring cookies, too. They always help." Evie bounced, pleased at the prospect, and went back to color-highlighting her notes.
