[Media Studies & Communication: Week 2]

There's a coffee machine in the back of the room - a little dusty, but he'd had to dig it out of one of the closets - and cups, cream and sugar for those who want them. There's also a table by the door with an informational handout for everyone to take.

Logan is sitting on his desk again, the screens off today, and he waits until everyone's taken their seats before beginning.

"So, like we began with the question last week, we're going to be delving a little into your personal relationships with media, ripping off using the format from a radio program called the 'Desert Island Discs'.

"Imagine you're a castaway on a desert island. Now imagine that you're allowed to take four pieces of music with you." He smiles slightly. "I realize that, for some people at least, your tastes are always changing, but this is just for the assignment, so try not to overthink it.

"In addition to the four pieces of music, you get to have one book - not counting the Bible or any of the works of Shakespeare - and one luxury item which has to be inanimate and have no practical use.

"That's the first part of the assignment. Go ahead and take a few minutes to write that down, get it on paper."

Logan lets the class do that, getting himself a cup of coffee while he waits. After about fifteen minutes, he returns to the head of the class. "Okay, now we pair off. Find a classmate and trade lists. Once you've done that, take turns discussing items on your lists, why you made them, why they're important to you - I don't expect you to necessarily be familiar with what your classmate's choices are, but have an open mind, engage in some discussion here.

"Lastly, write a paragraph about the assignment. Do you think media is an important part of your life? Does what you listen to, what you read, really say that much about you as a person?"

[OOC: Wait for OCD! HAVE AT. And sorry about last week guys - it was a very bad day for me and I dropped the ball. You guys deserve more than I gave you. The class assignments are, of course, optional - especially the paragraph - but have fun with it!

Also, I'll be on for a wee bit longer tonight, but back at about 9am PST tomorrow when I get to work. After that, I'll be on most of the day.]

"Uh, a guy called John," said Elizabeth. "He's a good friend I don't really get to see anymore."

"Miss him, huh?" D asked. "Off the record."

Elizabeth nodded slowly. "Definitely," she said quietly. "For a while, he was the only one I could really talk to about some things."

"I know how that goes." D softly smiled. "I hope you get to reconnect with him."

"Me too," nodded Elizabeth, lost in thought for a moment, before she shook herself. "Okay, your turn. Why did you choose what you chose?"

"Almost everything is something from home, whether it's the anthem of our planetary federation, a bit of popular music, or a tome of Kataris' poems." D explained simply, leaving out her one item that wasn't colonial.

"Why poems instead of prose?" asked Elizabeth curiously.

"You can wrap just as much truth in a few well selected couplets as you can a paragraph of reflective scene setting. That and with the poems, the story changes more often, touches more chords within the soul than most books, fact or fiction, ever manage." D shrugged. "I can't think of anyone I know back home who hasn't read or at least heard something by Kataris. Classic, you know?"

Elizabeth nodded. "Do you have a copy with you?"

D grinned. "Yeah, up in my room with my cameras and other crap I lugged here."

"Could I take a look at it sometime?" asked Elizabeth eagerly, before frowning. "Wait, is it going to be in a language that I'm not going to understand?"

"Sure. Stop by anytime." D grinned then laughed good-naturedly. "Considering that I can understand my textbooks and signs around town, I think we'll be safe as houses on that. If not naturally, then thanks to the magic of Fandom."

"Cool," grinned Elizabeth, bouncing slightly in her seat. "The same goes for you, if you want to raid my bookcase at any point and see how some of the Earth classics compare."

"Thanks!" D smiled. "I may just do that!"
