[Media Studies & Communication: Week 2]

There's a coffee machine in the back of the room - a little dusty, but he'd had to dig it out of one of the closets - and cups, cream and sugar for those who want them. There's also a table by the door with an informational handout for everyone to take.

Logan is sitting on his desk again, the screens off today, and he waits until everyone's taken their seats before beginning.

"So, like we began with the question last week, we're going to be delving a little into your personal relationships with media, ripping off using the format from a radio program called the 'Desert Island Discs'.

"Imagine you're a castaway on a desert island. Now imagine that you're allowed to take four pieces of music with you." He smiles slightly. "I realize that, for some people at least, your tastes are always changing, but this is just for the assignment, so try not to overthink it.

"In addition to the four pieces of music, you get to have one book - not counting the Bible or any of the works of Shakespeare - and one luxury item which has to be inanimate and have no practical use.

"That's the first part of the assignment. Go ahead and take a few minutes to write that down, get it on paper."

Logan lets the class do that, getting himself a cup of coffee while he waits. After about fifteen minutes, he returns to the head of the class. "Okay, now we pair off. Find a classmate and trade lists. Once you've done that, take turns discussing items on your lists, why you made them, why they're important to you - I don't expect you to necessarily be familiar with what your classmate's choices are, but have an open mind, engage in some discussion here.

"Lastly, write a paragraph about the assignment. Do you think media is an important part of your life? Does what you listen to, what you read, really say that much about you as a person?"

[OOC: Wait for OCD! HAVE AT. And sorry about last week guys - it was a very bad day for me and I dropped the ball. You guys deserve more than I gave you. The class assignments are, of course, optional - especially the paragraph - but have fun with it!

Also, I'll be on for a wee bit longer tonight, but back at about 9am PST tomorrow when I get to work. After that, I'll be on most of the day.]

Then she bit her lip, decided that what she was wearing around her neck counted as clothes and so she wouldn't include it, and instead wrote, For my luxury item, I'm bringing my stuffed Ewok, George.

Then she put down her pen before she could change her mind about her book again.

The hardest part of making the list for Dean was narrowing it down to four songs. Four albums would've been easier. But then he got an idea of how to work around that and grinned as he wrote out his answers.

Music:
1. Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
2. AC/DC - Shook Me All Night Long
3. Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper
4. Led Zeppelin - In My Time of Dying

Book: Collected Works of Raymond Chandler

Luxury Item: an mp3 player loaded with all the songs I wanted that didn't make the four songs list. And a lifetime supply of batteries.
