Zack dropped into the cafeteria and heaped his plate with Mecurunee und Cheese-a.

Mmm...macaroni and cheese.

Anders had a notebook under one arm as he piled a plate with mecurunee und cheese-a, seled, and about three frooeet coops, then carried everything plus three glasses of milk precariously over to a table.

As he ate, he seemed to be very intent on reading something in what appeared to be a brand-new, blank notebook. That would be because he had the next Unknowns in Eden trade paperback inside it, of course.

The cafeteria food was a damned sight better than military food or jail food, plus it didn't look like Pete had to pay for it.

Hence the sheer volume of food on his plate, that he would likely not manage to eat all of.

He found himself a spot where he could observe as much of the cafeteria as possible, and sat down to shove macaroni down his throat.

Lyra heaped a plate full of food, although it looked strange to her, and sat down, tucking in. After she was through, she filled another plate, and glancing around, walked out with it. She hoped it wasn't against the rules, but she was willing to risk it. Pounds to pence said that Rory hadn't eaten much since... whomever it was left.

"Pete!" Broots grabbed his tray of mac and cheese and sat down at Pete's table. "So how's your first day of classes?" He took his laptop strap off of his shoulder.

"Hello Brrrrroots," Pete drawled, mouth full of macaroni and cheese. "Only got the one class today. And I ain't had that yet."

"Oh, which classes are you taking then?" Broots began the disection of his fruit cup.

"Introduction to 21st Century Popular Culture, Introduction to the 'Internet', whatever that is, Hunting, US Government, and Criminal Justice."

"I'm in US Government with you. And also in Spanish, World History, Applied Science, and Myth in History. I can show you what the Internet is, if you want. It's a computer thing."

Well, that's what Pip is trying to find out.

Pete brightened, remembering what he'd seen on Conner's "computer". "Like them tentacles and the girls not wearin' much clothing?"

"...Um. Well, you can use the internet to find those things, sure. But it has other uses as well." Broots paused with a fork full of maccaroni on the way to his mouth. "Tentacles?"

Pete nodded. "They were wrappin' around this girl, like . . ." He gestured a bit wildly. "Fascinating technology you got, here."

Having spent part of the morning visiting her comatose roommate, Nadia was already in something of a mood. Then she spotted Pip.

Who was probably still mad at her from the whole band thing. She sighed and took her tray over. Maybe he'd cooled off?

"... ... ... Not all of us use the internet only for porn. There's plenty of other things out there as well. And well, yeah, that too."

"Why would anyone bother with anything else?"

"...You can use it for school work, hacking into the government, um, finding out more about something you're interested in. There's a ton of stuff you can do."

Nadia brightened again. "Hacking into the government, you say?" He paused. "Those things come with axes?"

Broots swallowed and back tracked. "Not litterally, it's a term. You go into the government's computers from yours only it's illegal and the reason I'm here."

"What good is it to go into their computers?"

"One, it's fun. Two, it's against the law. Three, nowdays, all information is stored on computers so if you get into the governments computers you basically know everything they do about everyone and everything."
