Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

Lorelai, of course, has a very large mug of coffee in her hands as her students file in. She smiles at them brightly and waits until they've all taken their seats before beginning to speak.

"Good afternoon!" she greets. "I'm Lorelai Gilmore-Danes. I realize that's a mouthful and I have no problem with any of you calling me Lorelai. If you're not comfortable with that I'll answer to Ms. Gilmore or Ms. Danes, but you definitely don't need to use the whole thing, okay?"

She put her mug down passed out papers to each student. "This is your syllabus. It's more of a guide than it is set in stone, so it may change after we talk today."

After passing out the papers, she sat on the edge of her desk and picked up her mug again. "Now, I'm guessing most of you are from other times and places. I'll best be able to help you if you tell me where and when you're from and what you want to learn from this class."

"Huh." Lyra said, totally ignoring any sarasm that might have been there. "You're from Ch'in, than? I mean, China?"

She looked at him with a half-smile on her face. "Sorry, not from this world."

"Neither am I. I'm from the Fire Nation," he looked up from the dictionary and glanced at Lyra. "Where are you from?"

"Oxford, England. I grew up at Jordan college." Her brow furrowed as the rest of what he'd said sunk in. "Fire Nation? Doesn't sound familiar. Is it very different from here?"

"Yes," Zuko replied, again with the eloquence. Talking about home wasn't something he was eager about. "Is Oxford England?"

"Oxford is a city in England. About, mmm, hold on." She dug through her backpack until she came up with a small atlas. She flipped through until she finds a world map (http://history.sandiego.edu/gen/maps/2000s/2004world1600.jpg), and points at China.

"There, that's China. And all the way over here, that's England." She watches him put of the corner of her eye. Aside from the demon, he's the most interesting person she'd met here.

Zuko's eyes widened as Lyra was the first person to actually show him a map of this world. It just confirmed what he already knew; he was nowhere near home.

"Where are we now?" he asked with some urgency.

Lyra blinked at the intensity of his voice.

"Uh, about here," she said, pointing again. "Are you okay?"

He shook his head. "I shouldn't be surprised. My world is not even on here."

Lyra shrugged. "There are a lot of different worlds. Jordan college? The place I grew up? Doesn't exist in this world, either. So, we're a bit alike that way."

Zuko doubted that, but he didn't feel like discussing it so he just nodded. "Hence this class."

"Exactly." Lyra nodded. "What other classes are you taking?"

"Gym," he replied, unaware of the other class he was apparently following and which he would hate. "The teacher asked me to assist him."

Lyra nodded. "You're a fan of the physical, then?" She smiled. "And feel free to tell me to sod off if I'm keeping you from translating."

Zuko for a moment looked tempted. "They go together."

Lyra looked confused. "Pardon?"

"I'm a firebender," he said. "It's more than just being fit. The fire comes from the breath, not the muscle." How many times had his uncle told him that now?

"A firebender? We don't have anything like that in my world. Can you control fire?" Lyra was fascinated by the idea.

He nodded. "Yes."

"Wow." Lyra sensed that he wanted her to go away, but she wanted to say something first. "I'm going to go ask Ms Gilmore something, but if you want to, we could get together and go over our notes together. I tend to miss things when I'm writing fast."

Nope, not a ploy to help, not at all.

Zuko blinked. "We did not learn anything today."

"No, I meant in future classes. Not this one."

Oops.

Zuko looked suspicious, but it more had to do with his past than with Lyra. "I suppose."

"Great. I'm done after this class, so any time after this is okay with me. We can work it out next Monday." Lyra smiled disarmingly.

Zuko nodded. Charm? Not so much his thing.
