Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

Lorelai, of course, has a very large mug of coffee in her hands as her students file in. She smiles at them brightly and waits until they've all taken their seats before beginning to speak.

"Good afternoon!" she greets. "I'm Lorelai Gilmore-Danes. I realize that's a mouthful and I have no problem with any of you calling me Lorelai. If you're not comfortable with that I'll answer to Ms. Gilmore or Ms. Danes, but you definitely don't need to use the whole thing, okay?"

She put her mug down passed out papers to each student. "This is your syllabus. It's more of a guide than it is set in stone, so it may change after we talk today."

After passing out the papers, she sat on the edge of her desk and picked up her mug again. "Now, I'm guessing most of you are from other times and places. I'll best be able to help you if you tell me where and when you're from and what you want to learn from this class."

"Oh, hi Lyra! Sure I remember you," Kaylee said cheerfully. "Yeah, I'm takin' this class because a lot of stuff from this time doesn't make sense to me."

"Me too. Or neither. Whichever's right." Lyra smiled. "I listened to that Rilo Kiley, uh, CD? I liked it."

"Oh, you did?" Kaylee beamed. "I'm so glad to hear that."

Lyra grinned back; Kaylee's smile was infectious. "I'd love to get together sometime and see if you have other recommendations."

She laughed and looked around. "I'd be worried that we're off topic, but isn't this waht this class is supposed to be about?"

Kaylee smiled brightly. "I'd like that. I'm still tryin' to learn more about the music of this time, but I'm more than willing to give recommendations."

She laughed as well. "Yeah, guess it is."

"I like fixin' things, like engines," Kaylee said. "I was the mechanic on my ship before coming here."

"What else do you do?" she asked.

"I was a student, at St Sophia's." It was the least of the things she was, but she didn't feel like standing there for the hours it'd take to explain everything.

"I grew up at Jordan college in Oxford. England." she added, just in case. "So I've always been surrounded by scholars."

"Oh, that sounds nice. I was surrounded by a few smart people. A lot of idiots, too," Kaylee said, thinking of Jayne when she said that last part.
