[OOC: Roster/Syllabus]

As the students file into the old journalism classroom, those who've been there before would notice that it hasn't changed much. There are the requisite desks fanned out across the room, all facing the head of the class where there is a heavy desk and chair. All along the wall above the desk there are screens, like huge flat panel monitors, that seems to be flickering silently through a variety of mostly news and documentary programs, as well as some commercials, sitcoms, music videos and talk shows.

Their teacher leans on the side of the desk, looking through a folder of papers as everyone finds a seat.

When he glances up, he smiles and takes off his glasses ~~in dramatic fashion~~. "Good morning, class. Welcome to Media Studies and Communication. I'm Logan Cale - Mr. Cale is fine, really, or Professor if that makes you more comfortable."

Logan puts down the folder and pushes away from the desk to stand in front of the class. "Communication is a vital part of our existence. You guys do it every day, right? You pass each other in the halls, maybe say hello, or stop to talk about last night's radio broadcast." He gestures at the screens behind him. "Mass communication - TV being one example of it - has pretty much the same function.

"It's all about information. The exchange, dissemination, and, sometimes, deliberate modification of it in many different forms - which we then study to see how they work, the pros and cons of each type, and how it all can apply to you specifically.

"Communications and media studies is a pretty mixed bag," he says, and sits on his desk again, picking up a Y-People comic book. "Pretty much anything you can think of, that you can read or watch or-" He puts the comic down and picks up a box labeled Half-Life 2. "-even play on your computer - is a medium for information, and the study of these things involves a bit of intuitive anthropology, psychology, and sociology, but not, I think, anything you guys can't grasp as reasonably intelligent individuals." He grins. "Or at least I hope you guys are, since we might be flying by the seat of our collective pants a bit in this class."

Logan folds his arms, looking at the class. "So, now that we've established that I like to hear myself talk, let's find out who you all are. Tell us your name, place of origin, and, in keeping with, you know, the theme of the class, tell me what your favorite medium of communication is and a little bit of why."

[ooc: I'm on until ungodly hours of the night on PST time and, since I have tomorrow off, will hopefully be up most of the day for whatever you all might want to do. Of course, all you really have to do is sign in.]

"Keep it to a reasonable volume, please, but I'm not about to quash your information spreading urges."

Jake was looking around for the coffee maker.

Jaye tilts her head at Jake, and says, "It's a good look for you."

Jaye is not going to start thinking the teacher is cute. Jaye is not going to start thinking the teacher is cute. Jaye is not going to start thinking the teacher is cute...

"Cute, huh?" Sam whispered. Hey, she was dating, not dead.

Jaye nods emphatically and whispers back, "I think I'm actually going to be paying attention in class..."

"Too bad teachers are off-limits for shirtless day," Sam said.

"Is that a rule? What if we get him in town?"

"I think there's a students can't see teachers shirtless rule," Sam said with a sad shake of her head. "Except under unique circumstances."

"But! The beach!" Jaye insists. "We should invite him to the beach. Shirtless is socially acceptable there."

Once a Seahorse...

"We'll have to do it soon, then," Sam agreed, "since it's going to start getting cold again soon."

"It is Labor Day," she says. "Could always invite him out to celebrate the holiday."

Sam coughed in an attempt to cover the snicker. "We could."

Jaye's grinning like an idiot. "You want to ask him, or should I?"

"Oh, I think you definitely should be the one to do this."

Dean eyed Jaye, trying to gauge her mood. This was the first time he had seen her since he'd blurted out about him and Alec and since she didn't currently look homicidal, he took a chance and approached her.

"So," he said by way of greeting, "I think we can probably agree that I have no sense of appropriate party conversation, huh?"

Jaye's not exactly looking at him, but just somewhere over his shoulder or something. "You'd been doing fine up until a certain point," she says. "Maybe you should just stick to the first method of conversation."

"Maybe." He sighed and took a deep breath. "I'm sorry, Jaye. That wasn't the time or place or way that I should've said anything. I just... I didn't realise you two had got that serious."

"Yeah, apparently that's the concensus," she grumbles. She kind of wonders if she can move back in time to change last night's conversation with Jack to today.

"Well, you did have the whole open relationship thing going all summer," Dean pointed out before he could stop himself.

"You noticed," she says. "So after you got on my case about that and figured out that we weren't boyfriend/girlfriend you just said 'hey, why not?'"

"There was a little more to it than that," Dean said, trying to stay calm, though it wasn't exactly easy. "But even if there wasn't, it's not like Alec was going against the rules you two had set up."

"Yeah, well, I know for next time, open relationships lead to me getting clobbered by people I thought wouldn't do that," she says, and she's not sure if she's more angry or hurt. "Either way, you've got him. Happy?"

"Yeah because this was all just a competition," Dean said, rolling his eyes. "Just because Alec and I have... a thing... doesn't mean that he stopped caring for you. Okay, yeah, it means he's not going to be exclusive, but Jaye, that wasn't going to happen anyway."

And now Jaye's either going to start yelling in class or start crying, and she doesn't want to cause a scene either way. So she just goes with a simple, "Get away from me."
