[Media Studies & Communication: Week 1]

[OOC: Roster/Syllabus]

As the students file into the old journalism classroom, those who've been there before would notice that it hasn't changed much. There are the requisite desks fanned out across the room, all facing the head of the class where there is a heavy desk and chair. All along the wall above the desk there are screens, like huge flat panel monitors, that seems to be flickering silently through a variety of mostly news and documentary programs, as well as some commercials, sitcoms, music videos and talk shows.

Their teacher leans on the side of the desk, looking through a folder of papers as everyone finds a seat.

When he glances up, he smiles and takes off his glasses in dramatic fashion. "Good morning, class. Welcome to Media Studies and Communication. I'm Logan Cale - Mr. Cale is fine, really, or Professor if that makes you more comfortable."

Logan puts down the folder and pushes away from the desk to stand in front of the class. "Communication is a vital part of our existence. You guys do it every day, right? You pass each other in the halls, maybe say hello, or stop to talk about last night's radio broadcast." He gestures at the screens behind him. "Mass communication - TV being one example of it - has pretty much the same function.

"It's all about information. The exchange, dissemination, and, sometimes, deliberate modification of it in many different forms - which we then study to see how they work, the pros and cons of each type, and how it all can apply to you specifically.

"Communications and media studies is a pretty mixed bag," he says, and sits on his desk again, picking up a Y-People comic book. "Pretty much anything you can think of, that you can read or watch or-" He puts the comic down and picks up a box labeled Half-Life 2. "-even play on your computer - is a medium for information, and the study of these things involves a bit of intuitive anthropology, psychology, and sociology, but not, I think, anything you guys can't grasp as reasonably intelligent individuals." He grins. "Or at least I hope you guys are, since we might be flying by the seat of our collective pants a bit in this class."

Logan folds his arms, looking at the class. "So, now that we've established that I like to hear myself talk, let's find out who you all are. Tell us your name, place of origin, and, in keeping with, you know, the theme of the class, tell me what your favorite medium of communication is and a little bit of why."


[ooc: I'm on until ungodly hours of the night on PST time and, since I have tomorrow off, will hopefully be up most of the day for whatever you all might want to do. Of course, all you really have to do is sign in.]

"I'm Logan Cale, from Seattle, Washington a few years from now, and I used to be a journalist for the Seattle Free Press, so I'll just cheat and say newsapers. They're very accessible, rarely without bias, and have articles on everything from current events to sports. And, of course, there's always the comics page, if the rest is too unbearable."

"I'm Dean Winchester, I was born in Lawrence, Kansas, but I've spent most of my life travelling around. I guess I'd have to go with tv. Days cooped up in motel rooms trying to keep a little brother entertained, tv's pretty much a gift from the gods."

"I'm Rory Gilmore, and I'm from Stars Hollow, Connecticut before Fandom," she said. "And I like newspapers. They're classic, easy to access, and multifunctional. And there's something about newsprint on my fingers and seeing my byline that gets me every time."

"I'm Jake Gavin, from Geneva and DC. I'm from... Pretty much the present, I think. I like tv, and pulp fiction. Does pulp fiction count? I think it should if comicbooks count."

"I'm Mac, I'm from Neptune, California. I'm definitely a girl of the age of technology so I'd have to go with the internet. There's just so much scope, and all accessible so quickly and easily, even if there are sometimes inaccuracies."

"I'm Samantha Carter, and I'm an Air Force Brat, so I'm not really from anywhere, but I'm most recently from Colorado Springs, Colorado. I guess I'd have to pick the radio as my favorite medium--there's music, so you can hear how other people view the world and its events, but there's also little news bites, which are often too short to interject an opinion. Plus I can keep it on in the background when I'm doing something else."

"I'm Summer Roberts, and I'm from Newport Beach, California," Summer said. "I like the internet because you can find pretty much anything on there, including gossip. Oh, and real news too."

"I'm Peter Parker from New York. I have to go with the internet, but that's partially cheating from me since I ran the website for the Daily Bugle newspaper. Personally, I think my site was better than the paper itself."

As she had the terms before, D'anna arrived in class without the capability to process much more than "COFFEE, NOW, DAMNIT!" As such, she was carrying her requisite big-ass coffee Leonis Raiders coffee mug (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v722/no_chocolate/FH/leonismug.jpg) as she slid into a seat in the back.

She leaned, chin on top of mug, and survived the classroom (and her classmates) as the new professor (who was decidedly not Spider, but seemed, well, more journalistic than the last professor somehow) insisted on speak as though the words would actually filtering into her brain. Bwah, no not happening on the first day!

Her thoughts went something like this, "Hmmm, not Spider but the stuff is working. Wonder if he found the freaky smoking cat somewhere to run it all? Oh! There's Jaye, thank the gods, it will be an interesting class! Hamlet too... and, ouch, that guy that isn't Ben. Maybe I can just hide for the rest of term. More seahorses! Yay! Sam... and other Sam... Rory... Jake (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/992731.html?thread=53105115#t53105115) and... ummm, no, that's not right."

At this point that her blood turned cold, because this was journalism. Where there was journalism, there was coffee (usually) and where the two met, there was a Jake and a Krycek. It was a universal fandom rule! It had to be! But today, there sat Jake, prattling on about pointless and insipid things like usual and there was no Krycek. If there was no Krycek then... Something was very seriously wrong which possibly involved sharks and a psychotic Earth-daddy.

D'anna leapt to her feet and fled from the classroom. Coffee and blank notebook left behind on her desk, completely forgot.

"I'm Elizabeth Weir, and I'm originally from Connecticut," said Elizabeth. "I'm very fond of academic journals, newspapers, and, um the Legislative Archive."

When there's a free a second, Jaye goes to talk to the teacher. "Hi," she says. "I'm Jaye, you'll be seeing a lot of me this semester."
