Flight and Flying [Friday morning]

When the flight workshop arrived at the shed, they found it locked up tight and Anakin leaning up against it.

Wearing a beanie.

And a sullen expression, but that was kind of a given.

"For our last class," he said, "we're going to fly helicopters. The pilot's waiting for us over at Selkie Cove. Come grab a hat--and no, they're not optional--and then we'll head over together."

He even had one Faithful-sized. Anakin was thorough.

Anakin, much to the pilot's annoyance, immediately took over the instruction of how to fly the helicopter. After a quick but comprehensive overview of how the machine worked, the ~~totally modable~~ pilot was ready to take the students up on their own flights.

Zack was totally calm as he went up in the helicopter.

Really.

Anakin, safely on the ground, was chanting something a bit like "please don't crash" under his breath.

At least down here he could catch the students using the Force if it became absolutely necessary.

His eyes watched the sky. That wasn't an entirely comforting thought to him.

Jude was starting to cheer up as he took the helicopter up.

Totally not imagining Mike Dint in the rotorblades. Nope. Not Jude.

Whee, flying! As long as he didn't think about that one scene in Boardwarriors II, with the helicopter and the dude and the fiery explosion . . .

Bridge might be bouncing in his seat as he takes the helicopter up.

"No bouncing," Anakin called over the roar of the rotors. "It'll mess up the instruments!"

Bridge coughs, and attempts to still the bouncing.

Alanna...well, suprisingly she has not such a bad time controlling the helicopter.

"Nice work," Anakin said, smiling when Alanna came back out of the helicopter.

"Guh." Alanna said eloquently, but she was beaming.

Dean was still distinctly unenthused about non-space flight but at least it wasn't an F-16 again. He was a little uncomfortable going up, but compared with everything else that had happened the last couple of weeks, it just didn't seem worth the energy to freak out.

Consequently, he didn't do half bad on his flight.

"Good job," Anakin said, giving Dean a nod.

"Thanks," Dean said, with a little bit of a smile. "Guess this flying thing isn't completely as bad as I thought it was."

Molly's flight... was a little bit nerve wracking for the pilot. She probably flew a little bit higher and faster than he liked for a first time pilot. Oops.

Anakin was all smiles when she landed, though.

He liked a pilot who pushed it.

"Nice," he said.

Molly frowned at the pilot's back a little. "He didn't like the way I flew."

Alec was not letting a night's stay in the clinic stop him from flying a heplicopter. So it was probably just as well it was just him and the pilot alongside.

Maybe he was taking advantage of this chance, and it being the last class, but there were some really sweet moves (http://www.bestofgooglevideo.com/video.php?video=443) you could pull in a helicopter. Loops, barrel rolls and a nice little maneuver that involved spinning at high speed with the nose on a nearly fixed point.

So the pilot probably hated him, but by the time Alec landed he felt much better than he had last night.

Dean stared, glad he'd already taken his turn because that's the kind of thing that would turn him off flying in a big way. "Dude," he greeted Alec when he exited the helicopter and rejoined the group, "remind me never to get in a copter with you. That was just..."

Alec grinned, practically beaming. "Awesome?"

Alanna glared when Alec came out of the helicopter.

Alec grinned at her. "Hey, what's that look for?"

"You're not going to crash," Anakin said quietly. "Relax."

Peter flew the helicopter. He didn't crash or die or anything, but it was clear that flying within a planet's atmosphere may not have been his strong suit as a pilot.

"Not bad," Anakin said, nodding.
