The Kludge's Guide to the Universe | Dangershop, Wednesday Afternoon (Week 7)

The dangershop was set up as a classy, futuristic function room, with holographic waiters carrying trays of food and drink, and Harper was wearing a suit instead of his usual clothes. "This is our last class," Harper said, fidding with his tie. "Congratulations on surviving so far. Since, as I just said, we're going to be doing something a little different today."

"We're going to be having a party. However, you are not going to be the only guests. This is an important conference, with many important dignitaries and assorted others attending. Your job is not just to have a good time, you also have to ensure they do too. Schmooze, mingle, butter them up, try to not to start an interstellar war. The usual kind of thing."

"One more thing. Not everyone at this conference is here for the conference, amongst the guests, there are people with other agendas. Some worse than others. Try and figure out who these people are and what they want."

He tapped a control and the room filled with guests.

"Go on, get out there and mingle."

An extremely bored Neitzsechean with absurdly pretty cheekbones and shiny, shiny clothes was hanging out near the bar.

"Hi!" John bounces up to the guest. "Want a twinkie?"

Bolivar made a shooing motion at John. "If I wanted a twinkie, I would have one of my thousands of subjects bring me one."

"There don't seem to be any subjects around here," John says, looking around. "Twinkies are meant to be shared."

"I am the leader of one of the most powerful Neitzschean prides in existence," he replied. "I'm not meant to share anything."

"I was going to share with you," John says, already not liking whoever this was.

"But we're at a party, there's more than enough twinkies for everyone."

John scowls and puts the Twinkie greeting to rest.

"My name's John. What's yours?"

"Archduke Charlemagne Bolivar of the Sabra-Jaguar pride," he replied.

Parker bumped into him accidentally, and said, "Excuse me," then blinked at his dress sense, then the familiar cheekbones.

Bolivar looked Parker up and down, then smirked. "No apologies necessary."

"Wow, you look exactly like someone I-- briefly threatened," Parker admitted, since 'know' would be an exaggeration. "But I'm guessing you're not flammable under sunlight." She grinned, since flirting with a hologram didn't count. "I'm Parker."

"And I'm charmed," Bolivar smiled. "Not the last time I went out."

"Are you here for the food, the drinks, or the inane conversation?" Her grin widened. "Or do you have a marvelously secret agenda?"

"Mostly because it's hard for a pride with a reputation for treachery to keep that repuation without people to me treacherous to."

"So, whose back will you be stabbing tonight?" Parker noticed the bone-spurs, and cocked her head. "And are those as sharp as they look?"

"I haven't decided yet, there's far too many options," Bolivar replied, then held up one arm so Parker could examine the spurs more closely. "Sharper."

Bolivar smiled and nodded back.

Having received her drink, Elizabeth moved to stand by him. "How do you do?" she asked politely.

Bolivar smiled at Elizabth. "Better now that I have interesting company to talk to."

Elizabeth's returning smile was warm. "What brings you here this evening?"

"What brings everyone else to these tedious events," he replied. "Free food and drink."

Elizabeth laughed politely. "Most don't consider that adequate compensation for the suffering of an entire evening," she said.

"But we wouldn't have the opportunity to meet new and interestng people if we didn't."
