Wilderness Survival Redux - Week 6 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto looked far from happy as she addressed the class, giving a brief, yet highly informative, lecture on snares and pit traps.

"However," she added. "These particular style of traps fall down when you want to catch a nocturnal animal without doing harm to it, as they often react badly to the approach of day, or are in fact harmed by excessive light. Your job today is to try and devise a trap which would trap a large, nocturnal animal without doing it any harm. You can do this either on your own or in groups."

"Callisto?" Peter asked, after playing with the trap material for a few minutes and deciding more information is needed. "Just how intelligent a creature are we discussing? And how much sunlight would be a problem? Does it have to be pitch black or would indirect light - or light through a tree be fine?"

"Peter, I'm constantly suprised this creature can summon the mental capacity to even walk under it's own power," Callisto said. "And any sunlight is a problem, although a certain amount of indirect light ~~might serve it right~~ should not prove fatal."

"What's the point in trapping it then?" Peter asked, possibly taking his life into his hands.

"I have my reasons," Callisto muttered darkly.

Peter raised an eyebrow but nodded and went back to playing with the materials provided.

"Did you do it?" Rory asked quietly, sidling up to her.

"Yes, I did it."

"...are you?"

"Would we be having this class if I was?"

Rory decided now was not the time to point out that it was really, really hard to track Callisto's reactions.

Instead she said, "What can I do?"

Callisto glared at no one in particular. "Build a trap, then find some way to test it."

"Aside from that."

"Hit him. Hard."

"Okay, things that I can do from here," Rory amended.

"Send him hairgel mixed with holywater," Callisto decided. "He won't trust any packages from me."

"Will do. Anything I can do for you, though? Here? Not involving him at all?" Rory asked.

"I'm good with the hitting."

"Booze? Ice cream? Ice cream and booze floats?" Rory tentatively tried to wrap an arm around Callisto's shoulders in a quick hug, ready to ~~bolt~~ back off if it seemed unwelcome.

Callisto started wibbling.

That would be when Rory made it a real hug.

Callisto was doing a bit more than wibbling now.

Rory just kept hugging her and stayed quiet, since talking usually didn't help things.
