Stealth and Deception #6, Wednesday Morning, Danger Shop

As the class entered the saw Alfred standing behind a table in a large, column filled room. "Good morning class. Grab some breakfast and sit down, today is a long lecture day. I doubt we'll do anything practical."

"Now we've talked an awful lot about both stealth and deception, but there's one key element that we haven't discussed, one that I considered adding to my class title it was so important. It's one thing to get your way through a situation by lying, by decieving the searcher into thinking he's seeing something else. It's another to hide out of his vision, to make him never know that you are there.

"And it's quite another thing, though, if you do not have to employ any of these tricks," Alfred started to say before he suddenly and without explantation shimmered and disappeared.

"Because you have your searcher's attention focused somewhere else entirely," a voice said behind them. Aflred stood there with a remote. "I'm talking about distraction. The art of getting your enemy to look somewhere else entirely. Unfortunately," he continued, throwing the remote onto the table and walking around to the other side. "I have no particular techniques to demonstrate to you today. Becuase in this, there is not particular technique that works for every situation. More often than not it is merely the act of seeing an opportunity and grabbing it. Throwing a rock or a coin to imitate the sound of footsteps, rigging a disaster that requires the guards to all come running, making a feint, splitting your forces, and of course, the ever popular "blow up something important". These are all methods of getting your opponent, our paranoia created "constant searcher" to look somewhere else than where you are."

He walked over to the control console, pulled some glasses out of his pocket, and consulted a piece of paper. "Alright... this may take a while class, and for that I'm... no, wait! I've got it."

The scene shimmered and the students found themselves standing outside what appeared to be a small building.

"In this compound are secret documents," Alfred said, "vital to the well-being of the world. They are also, however, guarded round-the-clock by armed guards. The inside is filled with metal corridors, important machines, and all sorts of fun things which can be used for distraction. Including," he said looking over his glasses, "a small cache of explosives. So, what I want you all to do is dazzle me with your creativity. You're all a very bright and smart group, and today I am expecting to walk away from this room thinking "My heavens, I had never thought of that before. If only I had, that job in Mozambique would have gone so much easier. So go on, get into pairs and start dazzling me. I will provide any tools you want save those which could potentially be used as weapons. We're looking to get the enemy looking the other way."

Nadia approached Alfred holding her notebook and peering at a rather complex diagram of the simulated fascility, as well as the design for a rather odd contraption.

"I think we're going to need some tools. They're sort of . . . non-traditional."

"I'm not really sure. I think we're going to need a bucket of pink paint, a 1967 Volkswagon bus, 8 feet of aluminum tubing, two industrial sized air conditioning fan blades, 4--" She taped a few things on her notebook "No six highpowered electromagnets capable of lifting the 1967 Volkswagon bus, nail polish remover--the kind with no acetone--a bowling ball, a feather duster, two pairs of leather pants, sunglasses with built in cameras, lipstick with a sedative compound mixed in, and . . . a spatula. But I was kind of hoping to get your advice, first. I'm still working out the best places to put the electormagnets."

Nadia sighed and shifted her notebook.

"One bucket of pink paint. Preferably a gallon, but we might be able to make a quart stretch.

"One 1967 Volkswagon bus. It doesn't have to be in operational condition, but that might help.

"8 feet of aluminum tubing. Like the flexible stuff they use in ventilation systems.

"Two industrial sized fan blades. Not fans, fan blades.

"Six electromagnets capable of lifting the Volkswagon. That's together, not individually.

"One bottle of non-acetone nail polish remover--though if you could get one of those little containers with the sponge in it so we don't have to use cotton balls, that'd be great.

"One bowling ball. 8 pounds is fine.

"One feather duster. Emphasis on the feather. None of those 'swiffer' things.

"Two pairs of leather pants. Because two girls distracting the enemy definitely need leather pants.

"Sunglasses with built in cameras. Those are standard op-tech, as you well know.

"Same goes with the tube of lipstick with sedatives mixed into the formula. Which you might not know since I'm not sure that's standard op-tech for men.

"And one spatula."

She let out a breath. "Now, I'm thinking we could put the first of the magnets here," she tapped part of her notebook, then pointed towards the simulation with her pen. "Over where the patrol is most concentrated."

"Ooo, you're right. Okay, so we'll also need a sink garbage disposal, six small solar panels, three car batteries, and a microfiche reader."
nadiathesaint: (trust me)

"Well, yes."
nadiathesaint: (what?)

"With the microfiche reader, or with everything?"

"We're going for this whole Trojan horse thing. But since a horse would be way too obvious, we're going with a pink elephant. The VW bus is the base, with the pink paint. The fan blades are the ears, the feather duster is the tail, the tubing is the trunk. The bowling ball can be rolled down the trunk in order to provide further distraction, and we'll have the electromagnets set up to move it around by herself. The garbage disposal will provide a very odd noise for the guards to try to investigate, and the spatula and microfiche reader--"

Then the entire simulation vanished. Nadia blinked. Well, at least the guards went away. . . .

Nadia grinned. "The microfeche reader might have been to read the shop's computer's manual."

Nadia shot a grin to modded Phoebe. "Excellent. The key to distraction is to do something completely unexpected."

Modded Phoebe grinned and apologized for disappearing. "Well, we have been learning from the best."
