How to Win Friends and yadda yadda yadda [8/15]

Cox belts out a sharp peircing whistled and points for everyone to sit down in their seats. When everyone is at least pretending to pay attention, Cox begins his rant lecture.

"If you're like me? Chances are people are going to annoy you with their pesky personal problems that will distract you from your main goal in life. In order to deal with this issue you must learn to look like you care when really you don't.

Method One: Feign interest.
"Gosh Newbie. I never realized how wonderfully boring your life could be. Please tell me in excruiating detail about how your stuffed dog smells like pancakes."

Method Two: Barely acknowledge their existence
*grunt*

Method Three: Find a polite way to get out of the conversation while still making said person think you care about their feelings
"Go away Newbie."

Please pair up with another classmate. One of you will whine and emo about your life and the other will use all three methods outlined for you. Then switch."

"Did you have electricity in the Underworld?" Greg asked sympathetically. "Or did you just have to do stuff by candlelight? Or...fire-in-your-hand light?"

What? It was a serious question.

"Torches and candles mostly," Bel said. "Magical lighting if you could do it."

Greg nodded, giving a little grunt of rapt interest. No, really.

"So anyway," Bel went on, "I got raised in the Underworld, but it sucked because I got picked on by all the other demons because I was half human. They made my life hell. Literally."

"Dude, I got teased when I was younger, too!" Younger meaning fifteen or so, but still, point stood. "Um. I mean, no sympathy, go away!"

Greg tried very hard to look stern. It didn't work very well.

"You got teased?" Bel asked. "Yeah, that's rough. What, were you a smart kid or something?"

"And a skinny one with awesome hair," Greg said. "People were jealous, you see."

"Mmm hmm," Bel said, nodding politely. Really.

"And I got shoved into lockers a lot," Greg said woefully. "And occasionally beat up. Just 'cause I like chess and test tubes!"

"While I think it's just cool that we have so much in common," Bel said, checking his watch, "I really gotta get going. My girlfriend is waiting for me and I don't want to make her wait." He gave Greg a tight smile. "Been nice talking to you."

"Lucky you, having your girlfriend around," Greg continued woefully. "Mine skipped town. But I understand if you have to leave."

Bel couldn't help but snicker. "Don't worry, I'll bring her back safe and sound."
