Stealth and Deception #5, Wednesday Morning,

After getting another handwaved e-mail to come to the Danger Shop, the students would have found if littered with doors. Lots and lots and lots of doors.

"Good morning class," Alfred said as they entered. "Breakfast and caffeine are over there. Get some, sit down, and we'll talk about infiltration. Now there are many types of alarms and many ways of keeping a person out of a door. But we who are exceptionally sneaky do not worry about such things as locks or alarms, do we?

"As I said before, the types of locks and alarms are limitless. And some of them require some very specialized knowledge and tools to break. Therefore, today we are only going to talk about one, the one with the most useful applications."

Alfred held up a rolled up black cloth and let it unroll, revealing a line of well kept tools.

"Today, class, we're going to talk about lockpicking."

So saying, he went into his lecture

After finishing, he took a sip of tea from a nearby cup and pointed to a table. "On that table are lockpicking sets. These aren't holographs, they're real lockpicking sets I obtained for you, and they are yours to keep.

He gestured to the doors behind him. "Have fun, class. I'll be here if you need any hands on assistance. And don't be afraid to ask."

He glanced down at his notes. "Oh, and will Miss Santos see me after class?"

"Mm. And just how often to pirates lose the keys to their treasure chests?"

"You would be shocked how often it happens." she said seriously. "It is a regular epidemic."

Lana worked quite intently on her locks, showing a modicum of success at some of the easier ones. She found it terribly amusing to think that she would now have her own set of lockpicks.

Lana grinned. "I know! I can't say I ever wanted a set of lockpicks before, but now I feel all girl-detective-ish!"

The first thing Nadia did was look over the set of lockpicks carefully. This was good stuff.

Then she set to work on each of the doors, unlocking the easier ones in moments, and taking the tiniest bit longer with each of the more complex locks.

Really, this was something she'd known how to do even before she was trained. Maybe she should drop this workshop?

"May I see one of those?" aske Seras, gesturing to one of the locks Nadia had so deftly opened.

Nadia stepped back. "Be my guest."

Seras picked up one of the more complex-looking locks and examined it delicately, trying not to disturb Nadia's work.

"Just trying to see if there's any way to tell if a lock's been picked," she explained, "But, I expect you'd need a magnifying glass or something..."

Seras looked over the instructions and over the neat little set of lock picks. And, while learning to pick locks and getting practical experience could indeed be useful, this was also a prime time to observe experts in action.

So, Seras found herself a quiet corner and settled back to watch Nadia in action. She was somewhat distracted by Pippi's squeals of glee.

Walter's been forced to try this once or twice, so he's glad to actually get some training. The picks are a very welcome addition to his toolkit in some ways, and as he looks them over, he might be considering how to get his tailor to incorporate tiny pockets for them in his waistcoat.

"You'd be amazed by how many different places you can easily hide a lock pick," Nadia mentioned casually as she popped open one of the more complex locks.

Walter was well-trained enough in focus not to look away from what he was doing until after he'd managed to pop the lock, which definitely was not something he got done as quickly as Nadia or Briar.

Then he may be looked Nadia over appraisingly, considering where she might be hiding lock picks.

"I'm not sure I'd be too surprised. Maybe you could show me what to look for sometime."

"Hair is a popular choice. Also, the back of a woman's heeled shoe, as long as your lock pick is made of the right material. Most pumps have built in bars in order to provide the proper arch support, so a lock pick slid in just next to that will go unnoticed even through x-ray security."

Briar calmly opened up all of the locks. He did stop to admire the lock-picks.

Pippi idly wondered if Briar was anything like Lana seemed to think he was.

Hmmm, lockpicking. Sakurazaki wasn't exactly the lockpicking type; it usually not necissary for type of work and it did rather go against the philosophy of her sort of work. She prefered....more brute methods of forced entry over such delicate ones. If it got to the point of breaking into a place, it was usually time to fight, anyway. Still, she does pretty well on the simpler locks, has to concentrate signficantly on the harder ones, and does experience a moment or two when she just wants to knock the shit over instead of dealing with the locks.

Jude was concentrating almost painfully hard on this lesson, his tongue poking out the side of his mouth. He was the forgetful kind of boy who was often without his keys, and all the locks in the mall (except the one on Ron's office - not surprising) were the kind to be easily jimmied with a SAK.

He was pretty sure after this lesson, Ron's office would be no longer safe.

As it happens, Pip had worn his millitary coat to class and in said coat where his own lockpicks. So he had found himself one of the more complex locks and was comparing lockpicking speeds with both to judge which were better.

So far, Alfred's were winning.
