Baking Workshop 8/7, Monday Morning

"Good morning," Piper says as the students arrive. She points out the plate on the counter. "You're going to make chocolate snickerdoodles today."

"The only extra ingredient in these is cocoa. Really," she adds as she hands them a list of instructions. "Feel free to ask questions if you have any."

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Baking Sheets

Spatula

Ingredients

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 eggs

2 cups flour

3/4 cup cocoa

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400F

Combine sugar, butter, vanilla and eggs.

Mix well.

Stir in cocoa, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.

Blend well.

Shape dough into 1 inch balls.

Combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon.

Roll dough in sugar/cinnamon mixture and place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until set.

Immediately remove from cookie sheets.

Once Sakurazaki was finished mixing everything into dough, Alphonse was about to start rolling them into balls as instructed until he remembered-- "Ah! Tradition."-- then broke off a small piece and popped it into his mouth with a grin.

Although she shook her head dismally, Sakurazaki grinned a little. "I swear, the day when you get sick after doing that, I am not going to hesitate to say //I told you so.//" She said it in Japanese for effect.

"But I'm not going to," Alphonse laughed, rolling up a few dough balls. "'Sides, I don't even know what you just said."

Smiling, Sakurazaki started to roll up a bit of the dough as well. "I said 'I told you so,' so we'll just see."

"I told you, I do it all the time," Alphonse grinned again, continuing to roll up the dough and place the balls on the baking sheet. "I won't get sick off of it, promise."

Sakurazaki considered him with a thoughtful grin for a moment, then the dough, and then Alphonse again. It was almost as if she was thinking about trying it herself, but she only laughed and rolling up another ball, continued just plopping them down on the sheet. Just her luck, she would try it and get terribly sick.

"Lucky us, this doesn't take very long to bake, either," Alphonse reminded once he plopped his last ball of dough on the sheet.

Sakurazaki took another look at the instructions. "Only eight to ten minutes, huh?" She smirked. "May as well just keep eating them raw like that."

"As much as I'd love to, that would defeat the purpose of this class," Alphonse pointed out, grinning. "Even if I do like the dough, I like the finished product better."

"Yeah." She smiled lightly. "I don't think I've ever even heard of these things before today. Hope they turn out well. But, when I work with you, they always do."

"Hey, I'm no cook, you could do perfectly fine without me," Alphonse said. "Anyway, they're like cookies, and really good ~~especially when made with people~~."

Sakurazaki nodded, opening up the oven for Alphonse to slide the cookie sheet in, and then closing it up behind them. Sighing, she leaned against the counter, arms crossing in front of her, and prepared herself to wait. Realizing that she was only minutely enjoying herself (when she usually greatly enjoyed this class), she felt like those eight to ten minutes were going to be a long time.

She wondered why she felt so...blech. How much of this past weekend, this past week, really effected her that much? She sighed again, turning to Alphonse. "It's not really that obvious, is it? The scar?"

Alphonse began to collect a few of the bowls and other assorted tools they used while mixing and measuring, but paused at her question. "You mean, the one on your cheek? It doesn't exactly stick out like a sore thumb, but it's not very unnoticeable, either..."

Sakurazaki followed Alphonse's silent cue and started to clean up the area as well. "That's good." She started wiping some spilled baking soda up with a wet cloth. "Ojou-sama wasn't quite able to heal it up like some of my other wounds because there were so many others that needed her attention. I just worry that people might ask about it, I guess."

"Well, some might," Alphonse said. "I guess a vague something rather than nothing will be better, though. Maybe not too many will inquire."

"I hope not," Sakurazaki let a small grin slide. "I'm actually not quite too sure how much of my scary-warrior reputation has successfully been carried over from Mahora to here, but probably enough that most people will be able to put two and two together and just assume their own vague sort of answer, right?"

"Perhaps if you explained you had an assignment over the weekend, that'll do," Alphonse suggested. "Walter's a vampire hunter and Pip's a mercenary, and they've both been on missions and what-not during the school year. Yours probably wouldn't be any more out of the ordinary."

"That's true," Sakurazaki nodded again, finally getting a little weary of all the business talk. Didn't she tell herself that she was going to relax and go back to be normal after her job was done? Isn't that what Ojou-sama would want her to do? Brandishing a suddenly bright smile, Sakurazaki declared, "But now? Cookies!" She leaned over to look through the little window in the oven. "How much longer until they're done?"

"Cookies indeed!" Alphonse smiled. He peeked through the oven window as well. "It shouldn't be too long now, unless my internal clock broke."

"They look like they're turning out really we--" It wasn't until Sakurazaki turned to offer a smile to Alphonse that she realized just how close they were to each other to look through the oven window. She faltered, blushing, and had to swallow down a sudden lump in her throat before she could finish her statement, straightening slowly and brushing idly at her skirt. "...well." She fanned herself with her hand idly; it was hot being so close to the oven.

It was probably a good thing Alphonse was a little oblivious this time around-- he only briefly turned his head towards Sakurazaki before straightening himself back up. "Yeah, I think it's only a few more minutes."

"Good," Sakurazaki nodded, then smirked. "You know, I should have baked for my classmates back home while I was there. They were pretty skeptical about a lot of things about Fandom, but I think that Sakurazaki Setsuna baking cookies would have thrown them way off."

"By the way," she added idly, "those pictures of Cuddles I took last session for the scrapbook were a big hit with the girls."

"Really?" Alphonse chuckled. "He is kinda cute, huh? He's grown a little since then, that crazy little fuzzball."

Sakurazaki also chuckled, although just lightly. "Yeah...." She was a little hestitant to continue with her line of thinking, but they still had a bit of time to kill and it would be better than silence, although it caused a little bit of blushing. "The few pictures of you recieved a few compliments, too, you know. Although the Cuddles to Alphonse ratio did lean heavily toward the kitten."

"I-It did?" Alphonse turned a little red. "Ahh, well... I'd rather Cuddles get the majority of votes."
