Constant Vigilance #4: Friday the 3rd, Morning. Serenity Cove.

Today, the class meets on the beach, to accomadate the student who has a bit of an aquatic problem at the moment. The Doctor set out beach blanket and towels, and has hauled the holoprojector out on a cart.

"Pass forward your requests I asked for, thank you. As I let you know, we're switching things around a bit. Vampires and werewolves will be at a later date. Today is simply 'Close Encounters of the Unattractive Kind'. Now, please remember, that it's not so much that I find these species particularly unpleasant, it's just we might as well show some of the more unsavory aliens out in the world. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. I'll be taking questions today, but no lecturing today. It's called close encounters for a reason. You'll be talking to the projections, trying to gather what you can from them. Ask them whatever. Remember they can't actually hurt you, but please only antagonize them if you're being terribly clever about it. There is no assignment for next week. Time for you all to put on your 'first contact' thinking caps. The projector will be sending out three different aliens. Talk to at least one, please."

The Doctor smiled, then turned on the projector. Three forms appeared...

The Sontaran did not have an eyebrow to raise. But if he did, he would have raised it.

"Weaker species of Earth, greetings."

"Okay, a little sexist on your part but I'm willing to assume this is possibly a culture clash," Willow said. "Um, I'm Willow. What's your name?"

"I am Field Major Styre of the Sontaran Empire," it replied.

"Nice to meet you," Willow said. "I'm a witch. There's no official title with that. Well, maybe some people do but I don't and frankly once you start spelling things with unnecessary capitals and Ys and Es I think you've gone off the point of doing magic in the first place. Not that I'd fault you for Ys or Es if that's your thing. It's just not mine. Which is fine. We can all have our own alphabet comfort level."

"I am not familiar with this term that you use," Styre replied. "I would be interested in analyzing what capabilities that such as a witch has in pertinence to war."

"It would depend on the witch," Willow said. "Different witches have different abilities. I'm still kinda new at this so I'm learning how to do the more heavy-duty stuff as far as vampire and demon fighting goes. But I'm getting really good at floating stuff with my mind."

"I see," Styre said. "It would also be of interest to test how long your muscles can withold strain, and how quickly you would die when denied sustenance. These facts would be most helpful."

"You, uh, don't have to test for that," Willow said. "We already know. We've got scientists and stuff. I could get you some books maybe?"

"Military recon requires first hand accounts," Styre said. "Your own species' data may be misleading."

"Why do you want to know, anyway?" Willow asked.

"I am seeing what resistance the Empire would recieve if we invaded this planet," Styre said. "So far, there is nothing to stop us."

"Okay, first of all that's very rude," Willow said. "You don't hear me talking about invading your planet now, do you? Second, hello, not stupid. Why would we tell you what our defenses are just so you could prepare for them? Sheesh."

"I do not expect you to cooperate," Styre said. "I merely expect your body to give me the data I require from extended testing."

"Okay, now we're totally into a sexual harassment area," Willow said. "Which is inappropriate for so many reasons, not the least of which is you didn't ask, we just met, and I do have a boyfriend."

"I do not understand what you imply," Styre said.

"Say you're sorry," Willow told him.

"Sontarans do not apologize to inferior species."

"Sontarans must get awfully used to only talking to themselves, then," Willow replied.

"We are bred for battle. That is our purpose. To conquer. Chit-chat is not the way of the Sontaran," Styre said.

"Why not learn new things?" Willow asked. "Take up a hobby. Read a book. Have an ice cream cone just because you're thinking of the way all the melty parts collect at the bottom."

"First we must conquer the galaxy," Styre said. "And before that, I must gather information on the planets before we invade. That is my purpose."

"Says who?"

"My superiors," Styre said. "The Sontaran Empire must expand. Information must gathered. That is the way of things."

"But that's not very nice to everyone else," Willow said. "Why not try talkinig to people instead?"

"What would talking achieve?" Styre asked.
