"Almost every day," was Tempe's reply, around a mouthful of pizza. She chewed and swallowed. "It's a way of attempting to be social, without actually going and actively seeking out people."

"A-ha," Cally said, smiling. "No wonder I've not really seen you around. Trying to be a hermit, huh?"

Tempe smiled shyly, a blush colouring her cheeks. "Yeah, that about covers it."

"I'm not really a social person. It just takes so much effort to go out and interact with people. It's much easier to just curl up with a book and get lost in the plot."

"Books are nice," Cally said, nodding. "I read 'em all the time. But you know, people can be nice too. If you find the right people, of course, it can be better than books, even."

Tempe nodded. "But at least books don't suddenly go off and abandon you without telling you they're leaving. And relationships with books are much less complicated and usually don't end badly."

It's possible that Tempe is a little bitter about people in general, and how she's been treated in life specifically.

"Still, I suppose you're right. Company from time to time can be nice. Especially with the right person."

Tempe grinned.

"And that's the key," Cally said. "Finding the right person. But hey, if you want to stick with books, I got plenty in my room if you ever want to borrow one."

"I think I already have. That would be really nice," Tempe replied, grinning. "Um, where is your room, anyway?"

"Five-Oh-Eight," Cally said. "You're totally welcome to stop by any time. Sharing books is, like, a law or something. You gotta do it."

Tempe nodded. "Gotcha. I'm in 317. And you're welcome to stop by and borrow my books as well, if you want. Anytime."

"I also bake cookies from time to time, if you're ever in the mood for chocolate."

Which, strangely, has nothing to do with books.

"Oooh, I'm always in the mood," Cally said.

After a pause, she coughed. "Erm, for chocolate, I mean."

Tempe couldn't help but giggle a little. "Of course. For chocolate." Though she probably wouldn't complain if chocolate was just a euphemism. She's all open-minded like that.

"So, what kinds of books do you like to read? Fiction? Non-fiction? Mysteries? Sci-fi?"

"Yes," Cally said. "I read practically everything I can get my hands on. And I get my hands on a lot of things."

"A girl after my own heart," Tempe replied. "I figure, if it has words on it, it was meant to be read."

"Exactly," Cally said. "I even read technical manuals, so, yeah." She finished her pizza and smiled. "I should probably get goin', actually. It was really nice meetin' ya."

"Yeah, later," Cally said, standing up and giving a little wave before heading off.

Completely unaware how sooner it would be, rather than later.

Yes, funny about that. Tempe obviously didn't realize how eager she would be to meet up with Cally again.

After Cally left, Tempe's eyes eventually made their way back to her textbook, but her concentration was shot.
