Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #4

Jarod was waiting with his hands behind his back as the class arrived. "Hello again. I hope you've all recovered from having to tell the truth last week," he smirked, "because this week you'll be lying yourselves sick."

"You've shaded the truth so much that it's no longer believable, or someone has checked your references--in any event, you've been found out. Your job during this class is to either pair up or have a group of three of you, and for one of you to make the other person or people believe that you know what you're talking about. It's your job to get yourself out of whatever trouble you've gotten yourself into. But it's your partner's job to come up with the scenario."

"You're teenagers, so hopefully I won't have to tell you how to lie, but I'm here if you have questions."

[ooc: Not here until 6 pm EST. The way this works is: Partner 1 confronts Partner 2 with the scenario that's been flubbed. Partner 2 lies his or her way out of it.]

"My sixteen brothers and my sixteen sisters and my parents and their parents and the next door neighbour and my third grade english teacher were all waiting to see you make an honest man out of me and you're dog was sick?" Jack's eyes were sparkling with barely suppressed laughter, but he managed to maintain a suitably horrified expression. "Was he really sick?"

"Very, sick sick," Rory said, covering up a laugh with a very fake cough. "He had the dreaded Puppyitis Poxicilis. It's only treatable if caught right away, you see."

"Well, Puppyitis Poxicilis, it sounds serious. I guess that's a good reason. Because it would be hard to adopt him if something happened to him." Looking not unlike a puppy himself, Jack asked hopefully, "So you haven't changed your mind? Because you already got the dowry, and you promised me a big wedding, and you said you loved me!"

Rory bit her lip. "I'll definitely be there, barring puppy-related emergencies," she said, nodding. "Would I pass up the opportunity to wear a gorgeous dress, in any case? Though I refuse to wear white, you know. It washes me out."

"You'll be beautiful in any colour." Jack sighed, and rested his head on his hands, gazing at Rory. "And I can't wear white. I always swore I'd save myself until after the wedding, but you just swept me off my feet." He fluttered his eyelashes, looking shyly at the floor. "So if you don't marry me, my life will be over -- no one else would want me now that I'm not pure." That noise might sound like a snicker, but it's not. Jack just had something caught in his throat.

"Oh, now that's not true," Rory insisted, and no, she totally did not snort in a terribly un-ladylike way. "Anyone would be lucky to have you, virtue or not! If something prevents me from following through this time, I'm sure you'll find someone else. Not that anything will, of course."

Jack looked at her questioningly for several seconds, then smiled in relief. "I told them there was a good reason why you weren't there. They said you were just after my dowry and my virtue," more snickering, which he quickly brought under control, "both of which you now have - but I knew they were wrong. It's just that your dog was sick. Because I know you'd never lie to me."

"Oh, no, never," she said seriously. "Your dowry and...virtue - " For some reason, Rory was incapable of saying that without a giggle escaping, " - are totally entrusted to the right person. I promise."

"And I believe you." Jack nodded solemnly, but he was laughing under his breath. "I'll reschedule the wedding. How's tomorrow sound for you?"

"I have to open the library tomorrow," she said, and that was the absolute truth. "Unless you want to have it there."

"A wedding in a library?" Jack gave that some thought. "Why not? Anywhere is perfect, as long as you're there. I'll start making the arrangements right away." He bounced to his feet, grinning in excitement, and leaned on Rory's desk. "Tomorrow I'll be Mr Rory Gilmore," the words started to dissolve into laughter, but he managed to get out, "and my life will be complete," before giving in entirely.

And that was it for Rory, too, who couldn't stop giggling. "I'll be sure to let everyone know that the date on the invitations has been pushed back," she managed through her laughter.

"Yeah, it's short notice, but I'm pretty sure my sixteen brothers and my sixteen sisters and the rest of them will be able to make it." Jack dropped back into his chair and put his head on the desk, still laughing. "I completely believed you were going to marry me. I'm almost disappointed that you're not."

"Come by the library tomorrow and we'll see," Rory giggled. "Really, though? I wasn't that bad? Because you were completely believeable as the poor, scorned, left-at-the-altar guy."

"Why, thank you. And you might regret that invitation," Jack warned with a grin. "But you were wonderful. Very earnest, very concerned with my virtue." He smirked. "It was the concern that really sold it."

"Yeah...somehow, the idea that I'm singularly responsible for your lost virtue is very concerning," Rory said, laughing.

"Yeah, I can see that." Chuckling, he leaned across and patted her hand. "But it's not anywhere near as worrying as me having a virtue to lose."
