Festivus in July, Fandom High front lawn, Friday afternoon

Sometime during morning workshops, when no one was paying nearly enough attention except those concerned, the Fandom High schoolgrounds had filled with snow.

For the record, "those concerned" meant Rory Gilmore and several dozen snow cone distributors from the mainland. But who wants to ruin the illusion? Students who were curious might assume that it was simply a Festivus in July miracle, or some such.

In the middle of the lawn stood a bare, aluminum pole. Festivus tradition, you know.

Parker considered the kind of ducks they had in Fandom, and shuddered. "I coudln't agree more. And they cancelled? Gah. Wait, that was the guys from the Kwik-Stop, right? Yeah, that's not a shock. Although it does suck for you." She took another bite of gingerbread, smirking. "I saw that in Scoobying. Did you see Sakurazaki *fly*? I had no idea she could do that. Shocked the hell out of me. And wait, who's the screen acting... frimp?"

"No! I was blindfolded. Squall, I miss all the swerval stuff. The teacher. She's blonde, always takin' notes. Daisy somethin'. Adair, I think."

"Well, she is a teacher," Parker pointed out. "In theory, she could be grading you? Or evaluating you? But this is Fandom, so...."

"I find it's easier to assume she's weird. That way when she turns into a horde of vampire squirrels or somethin', I'm not surprised."

Parker snickered. "Right. Daisy Adair, blonde, weird, so noted. I wish you were in Liars class with me, you could've seen Ranma turn into a girl when I dumped an iced tea on him."

"...was it magic iced tea?"

"You would think. But no, he's under some kind of curse? Some day he has to find a pond in China to get rid of it. Until then, cold-water girl, hot-water-boy. Like Cheer, only with gender-switching." She looked thoughtful. "Okay, I think I've passed blase' into some new weird territory when it comes to the oddness of my fellow students."

"I wish him luck. China's big. An' I think at this point the really weird thing would be someone perfectly normal."

Parker really tried to think of someone completely normal, and while Rory mostly qualified, there was the genius thing; and Angela might have been closer, except, hello, semi-psychic. "Hmmmm. You know, I can't name one completely normal student? Even me. My life's too weird, even though *I'm* normal." She shook her head, then grinned at Zero. "Which applies equally to you, by other people's standards."

Zero laughed. "I'm normal? Squall. I'll have to fix that."

"Mmmm. We need to get special powers, or destinies, or abilities, or..." She raised an eyebrow. "Possibly tattoos?"

"Well, there was that thing where I was the Library's minion, but it's over now. Thank squall. I have the ability to annoy Twitch a lot? Psht, tattoos. I have two."

"That's true. And I've been possessed a couple times, but it never lasted." Parker grinned. "Okay, now you're ahead of me. I have a new grievance. I don't think I've seen them, either. *Another* grievance."

"S'because one of 'em's on my thigh," Zero said. "I'll show you that one some time when I'm wearin' a skirt. An' the other one's between my shoulder blades. Here." She turned her back to Parker and pulled out her collar so Parker could see the tattoo in question. "It's supposed to be a Tibetan protection mark or somethin'. 'Course, it doesn't actually do anythin'. I got it after the zombies."

Parker studied it and said, "It's very pretty, even if it doesn't do anything. What's the other one of?" She looked thoughtful and added, "If I *did* get one, it would probably have to be tiny. Tatts aren't exactly corporate style."

"My initials. Well, my last initials. H dash S. Or you could get a non-tiny one somewhere a suit covers," Zero suggested. "Or take over the company and change the dress code."

"That's the eventual plan," Parker said cheerfully. "But it'll be years before I can do that. So, yes. Something covered by any suit I'd wear. Hmm. Maybe at the base of my spine? Although I heard that's painful." An idea occurred, and she paused, smiling a little. "A Catherine wheel, maybe."

Parker shook her head. "Hey, the last two weeks of August? Do you have any plans?"

"That would look really swerval," Zero said thoughtfully. "It does hurt, 'cause there's, y'know, spine close to the skin. Wrist is about the worst, I'm told."

"Yeah, actually. I can't remember exact dates off the top of my head, but one of those weeks I'm supposed to go home to see my family an' get to work on spoilin' those twins. Why?"

"So. Maybe for graduation, then, a teeny, tiny Catherine wheel, lit up with fireworks. And if it hurt-- well, that'd be worth it." Not that she could ever forget her mother. But still, it would be something she could carry with her, something she could *do*, when everything else would have to wait for so long.

"Angelica Demesnes is supposed to be doing that book-signing in Alexandria sometime around then. Dates to be decided soon." Parker's grin widened. "You up for a road trip and some interrogation regarding what happened in book three?"

Zero didn't answer verbally. She just bounced a lot and made a sound sort of like, "Eeeeeeeeeee!"

Parkers don't bounce. But they do grin like maniacs.

"Eeeeee!"

"Eeeeeeeeee," Zero said some more. And then, "She has so much to answer for. Like, the missing chapter."

"Exactly. And she killed off Running Wolf. With a sword. And a social disease." Parker shook her head, impressed. "I mean, the second guy was a much better choice, but still! What's the story there? Did she always mean to do that? Plus, maybe we can get hints on the next one, for Sapphy."

"I knooooow, and after she spent the whole second book getting them together. But the new guy's much better. The ex-boyfriend of the king of England? Oh, yes."

"If they ever make a movie? Jude Law. Just sayin'." Parker sighed happily. "Right, then. As soon as they post the date, we're there. I'll drive."
