Festivus in July, Fandom High front lawn, Friday afternoon

Sometime during morning workshops, when no one was paying nearly enough attention except those concerned, the Fandom High schoolgrounds had filled with snow.

For the record, "those concerned" meant Rory Gilmore and several dozen snow cone distributors from the mainland. But who wants to ruin the illusion? Students who were curious might assume that it was simply a Festivus in July miracle, or some such.

In the middle of the lawn stood a bare, aluminum pole. Festivus tradition, you know.

[Yes, the schoolgrounds have snow. I'm weathermodding and saying it's cool enough today through this evening for it to stick, and it'll melt overnight. And yes, we're having Festivus in July. For those not in the know, here is a handy Wiki link! Please wait for OCD. Up, yay!]

"Prettiness! And sometimes comfort. Mostly the impression you make, though." Parker rolled her eyes, still not about to make a snow angel, but packing a snowball and looking around speculatively now. "Serious clothes make a serious impression."

"Oh." River glanced at her own clothes. She guessed they didn't qualify as serious.

Parker caught the glance, and grinned. "Some people--" Zero, Angela, Jarod-- "--would say I need to lighten up when it comes ot the clothes thing. Clothes can make you or break you, though. At least, in my world."

River grinned back. "I would miss making snow angels though. Haven't done this in a very long time.

"No snow in space, I guess," Parker grinned, tossing the snowball at the aluminum pole. "Be glad you weren't here for the Snow Monsters. *That* was a trip."

"Snow monsters sounds nice," River said.

Parker shuddered. "Not even close. I sprained my ankle, got a concussion, and had to walk through the snow for a mile after I got hurt." She shook her head ruefully, remembering Jarod fixing her ankle. "Although some people had fun fighting them." John Shepherd and Rory, among others. And Jaye with the jazz hands. "Did you get a chance to fight Jell-O dragons a few weeks ago?"

River shook her head sadly. "I missed the Jell-O dragons. And the mummies. But I met the kittens."

"They were fun while they lasted." Parker grinned. "Although not as fun as the dancing weetiny bunnies. But most things haven't been. This--" She gestured at the snow, "--is another nice trade-off. Makes up for the vampires and those damn gremlins."

River sighed. "I've missed the vampires and gremlins too. And the bunnies." She looked sad.

"The bunnies may return. The gremlins are already back," Parker addded sourly. "Just keep your eyes open. And as for the vampires--" She shuddered, vividly remembering Drusilla, and what she'd done to so many people's heads. "Be glad. Be very very glad they're gone, River."

River smiled a little. "Yes. Yes I know." She sounded sad. "Sorry about your clothes."

"Enh." River gets points for apologizing, and slack for being, well, River. If it had been Cam or John or any of the guys likely to do this, there would me *much* more retaliation in store. "You owe me. You owe me..." Hmm. What?

Re: Non-Festivus things

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
River picked up that question and spoke it aloud. "Owe you what?"

Since she can't think of anything now, Parker decides to sock the I.O.U. away for the future. "A favor, sometime. A little one." She held her fingers close together. "Works?" She paused, remembering something she'd meant to tell River. "And if you could ignore my mind when there's singing in the background? That'd be a plus."

Re: Non-Festivus things

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course." River smiled again but not quite a happy smile. "I'll stay away from singing."

Parker met her eyes, hoping she could feel the truth as well as hear the words. "Mostly for the secrets, River. Ones that aren't safe for *me* to know." Mom, and everything else--

Mama may have
Papa may have
but God bless the child
that's got its own...

"I'll stay away from secrets. Have enough of secrets anyway. Locked in my mind. Can't reach them." River mumbled almost inaudibly.

"Good." And that had to be *so* much less than fun for River; other people's thoughts stuck somewhere in her brain. She tried to think of something fun, something light, and remembered-- "Hey, aren't you cheering at the game tomorrow? Do you know which team you're supporting yet?"

Re: Non-Festivus things

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
River blinked. She hadn't thought about it yet. "I guess I should support Tyler's team?"

Re: Non-Festivus things

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yay." Parker grinned. "That's good. You two are dating, I guess?"

Re: Non-Festivus things

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Now River grinned. "Yes, we are." She almost blushed.

Re: Non-Festivus things

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yay." Parker's smile widened. "I'm glad. He's an interesting guy. Hope his team wins tomorrow, so you can celebrate with him."

Re: Non-Festivus things

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hm. Celebrate." River smiled again. "But I guess he'd celebrate with the team."

Re: Non-Festivus things

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"There could be another celebration, later..." Parker's not trying to keep secrets? But the soundtrack to "All That Jazz" is playing in her head anyway. She snickers.
