Careers Fair, Fandom High Front Lawn, Friday Afternoon, 07/21/06

By lunch time, the booths were set up, the guests had arrived and there was quaint music playing from somewhere undetermined. Hawkeye is walking around with one of those portable microphone/speaker set-ups, roaming from booth to booth announcing the various guests that have come to Fandom to talk about their professions.

And despite what the mainland weather forecast said, it was definitely a nice, fine day.

Aly looked at the boy closely before answering. "First I assume that everyone's hiding something. Then I collect information. As much as possible until I know if how many grains of sugar he enjoys with his morning cup of tea. Recruit people in his household if possible and set a tail or three on him. Eventually people usually hang themselves. Did you have a specific situation I could give ideas on?"

"I was informed by a biased but fairly reliable source that my uncle was the one responsible for the murder of my Father. I wanted to be certain that this was true before I acted against my uncle, as he tends to be fairly cunning and manipulative."

"I'd start by searching through his rooms," Aly said. "Only the most skilled dispose of everything. If you don't know how to put everything exactly back, recruit someone to do so. Does the man have a wife? Recruiting one of her maidservants or one of the footmen may give you useful information as well. No one notices the servants, and they all know more than they let on." She looked at him sympathetically. "I'd offer you my Sight, but I'm only here for the day."

Hamlet nodded. That was decent advise.

"Seeing how his current wife is my Mother, I'm not certain that I should approach it too much from that angle. He also used some of my old friends, a former flame, and some of his servants to investigate me, so it is difficult to do to much. I do have the aid I did ask a theatre troupe to perform a play that mirrored his supposed actions, and he reacted to that. Is there any very subtle way that a boy under watch could investigate."

He smiled at her offer. "That's alright. I wouldn't ask someone who was only here for a career fair to get to involved in my family's drama. What is Sight? Some sort of magic?"

Aly blinked. "That...puts a different spin to it, doesn't it. Though I'd take his insistence upon investigating you as a signal of guilt. It rather sounds like he's trying to direct suspicion away from himself." She shrugged. "Which is what I would do if I were in his position. Is he attempting to blame you for your father's murder or just general attempts to make you seem untrustworthy?"

"You wouldn't have to ask if it were possible," she replied with a wink. "And yes, my Sight's a magic Gift. I can tell when people are lying, magic users, Gods, and a few other useful tricks."

"Just general attempts. Neither of us have yet to openly accuse the other of anything. The official cause of death listed for my Father is a snakebite, so many people are not aware that it even was murder." Talking about his Father was starting to being down his spirits a bit.

"That Sight sounds like it must be a very useful gift. Does it help you out a lot in your line of work?"

"Definitely, start your own counterattack as soon as possible," Aly advised. "Even if it's as small as half-noticed rumors in the streets. Or intimations that he's going a bit mad with age. Anything to start getting people to look at him with slight suspicion. Then when you take your next step, they'll be ready for it."

She noticed the slight drop in his mood and smiled at him flirtatiously. No, she didn't see anything wrong with flirtation the minute after speaking of revenge. "It can be quite a bit of help even though I try not to rely on it. Though it also attracts unwanted attention so there are drawbacks."

"And what exactly would the next step be?" he asked with some genuine concern. "My source wishes for me to kill my uncle as soon as possible, but I'm having some ethical difficulties with that."

He smiled back weakly at her. "A drawback? Can people then tell when you use it against them?"

"I couldn't tell you that," Aly said sympathetically. "But right now you want to make sure you keep room to maneuver in order to make a next step. If your uncle did kill your father, you don't want your entire town thinking that you're a no-account layabout and he's a paragon of virtue." She glanced at him from under her lashes. "Sounds like your source thinks he has a stake in it. Why not tell him that you'll take the mission from here?"

"Oh, no," she said. "It a passive talent. Used for observing rather than affecting someone. I meant from the Gods. One in particular thinks that my Gift means I ought to do his tasks in the world." She rolled her eyes but winked.
