Careers Fair, Fandom High Front Lawn, Friday Afternoon, 07/21/06

By lunch time, the booths were set up, the guests had arrived and there was quaint music playing from somewhere undetermined. Hawkeye is walking around with one of those portable microphone/speaker set-ups, roaming from booth to booth announcing the various guests that have come to Fandom to talk about their professions.

And despite what the mainland weather forecast said, it was definitely a nice, fine day.

Becky gave a wave and took another drag on her cigarette.

No, she wasn't exactly chatty. Shocking, huh?

Tyler sidled over to her. "Hi Becky. I miss your class."

"You could've taken it again," she pointed out.

"Yeah? I didn't know that," Tyler said, hands in his pockets. "Are you teaching a bunch of new stuff?"

"Nope," she replied. "Pretty much the same thing. Think you learned anything last session?"

"Oh yeah, tons," Tyler said. It was almost true. "If I ever need to pick somebody up in a bar? I'll think of you."

"It's a very important skill," she said, politely blowing smoke out the side of her mouth so he wouldn't have to deal with it. "You should try it out in Caritas at some point."

"Do a lot of people hook up there?" Tyler asked. "Always seemed like a quieter scene to me."

"Though last night was weird."

"Last night?" she asked, vaguely curious.

"A pink thing hugged my leg," Tyler said, starting with the most important detail. "And that girl Rory that looks like you was there with some other people and she was really, really drunk." He pulled a wee purple umbrella out of his pocket. "She gave me this and sang some dirty song."

"Rory's a goody two-shoes," she said, puzzled. "Huh. Why'd she give you the...little purple umbrella?"

"She's fine," Tyler said. "And I don't know. She just decided everyone needed them. I think I came in on the middle of something."

"It's too colorful," Becky decided, staring at the umbrella.

Aeryn almost passes by, but it's been a while since she's seen Becky. "Not much for speeches, are you?"

Becky shrugged. "They all know what I do, right? I'm not shiny and new."

"I suppose you have a point there," she says. "I doubt you have to actively recruit."

"I tried to hire a girl a few weeks ago, but she turned me down," Becky said almost sadly. "And I think she thinks we're good friends now."

Aeryn frowns. "Do I want to know?"

"Her name's Willow," Becky shrugged.

"I don't think I've met her," she says. "And you're... friends now?"

"She brought me coffee," Becky said. "I think this means we're friends."

"I wasn't aware of that custom," Aeryn says, and tries to think if anyone she doesn't like has ever brought her coffee.

"And she asked me for boy advice."

Something about this seems weird. "Sex advice?" she says.

"Kinda," Becky said, nodding. "It was 'for a friend,' but then there was boy talk, and it was all very slumber partyish." No, it wasn't.
