Looking even less happy than last class, Callisto pointed to the box. "Put your shoes in there and take a handout."

"Knowing how to make fire is one of the most important wilderness survival skills possible. Without it, you can't keep warm, cook, or use it to keep predators away from your camp."

"For today's exercise you will be split into two groups, one group will start a fire using a bow drill, and the other with flint and steel. You don't get to go home until you have a fire."

Callisto waited until the students had split into their groups, before speaking again.

"Another useful survival skill is the ability to create tools from scratch, even more important is the ability to figure out how to make the best use of the tools available." Callisto held up a pointed stick. "If you want your shoes back, I want a different use for a pointy stick from each of you at the end of class.

"One more thing, you're unlikely to find dry fuel for your fire," she said, picking up a bucket of water and tossing it over the firewood. "So consider this a touch of realism."

Tyler put his hands in his pockets and stared at the flint and steel as if he believed he could start the fire just by concentrating hard enough.

The whole set-up was a little back-to-basics for him.

"Not exactly a zippo and a spray can, huh?" Dean asked, picking up the flint and steel and experimentally striking them together to make a spark.

"I'd about kill for a pack of matches," Tyler admitted. "You?"

"I'd help you hide the body," Dean replied with a wry grin.

Tyler half-smiled. "Isn't that the saying? Friends help you move, good friends help you move bodies?"

He tapped the flint and steel together. Nothing.

Gwynn looked at the flint and steel and sighed. "Usually, I could do this. It's how we do it where I'm from when we're in hiding. but today..."

"You got a cold too?" Tyler asked, raising an eyebrow. "I shouldn't have gone swimming at night."

He punctuated the statement with a brief sneeze.

Gwynn nodded miserably. "I would have just stayed in bed, but I've heard scary stories about this class and Callisto."

She covered her face as she coughed.

Tyler winced. "Looks like you got it worse than me," he told her. "And yeah, I didn't want to skip class either. I'm not THAT sick."

"You gotta hit it more sharply," Dean said, demonstrating and sending sparks off the flint. He grinned a little. "I've played around with flint before; just never needed to start a real fire with it."

Tyler watched Dean carefully. "Okay, but will that work if the wood's wet?"

Dean looked at the wood. "Maybe," he said slowly. "If we have a lot of kindling and tinder. That's dry."

"Anybody got any pocket lint?" Sam asked, searching her own and finding some thread. "Or some dry leaves? Maybe some tree bark?"

"Dried grass would work too," Dean suggested. "With the heat we've been having, good chance we could find some of that."

"Good point," Sam said, nodding.

Tyler reached into his pockets. "I have gross tissues," he shrugged. "Grass is better."

He bent over for a fistful and tossed it atop the kindling.
