Looking even less happy than last class, Callisto pointed to the box. "Put your shoes in there and take a handout."

"Knowing how to make fire is one of the most important wilderness survival skills possible. Without it, you can't keep warm, cook, or use it to keep predators away from your camp."

"For today's exercise you will be split into two groups, one group will start a fire using a bow drill, and the other with flint and steel. You don't get to go home until you have a fire."

Callisto waited until the students had split into their groups, before speaking again.

"Another useful survival skill is the ability to create tools from scratch, even more important is the ability to figure out how to make the best use of the tools available." Callisto held up a pointed stick. "If you want your shoes back, I want a different use for a pointy stick from each of you at the end of class.

"One more thing, you're unlikely to find dry fuel for your fire," she said, picking up a bucket of water and tossing it over the firewood. "So consider this a touch of realism."

Give Callisto a use for pointy sticks and get your shoes back

Tyler signed in and kicked off his sandals. He was sniffling occasionally, with a loud snorting noise.

Tyler put his hands in his pockets and stared at the flint and steel as if he believed he could start the fire just by concentrating hard enough.

The whole set-up was a little back-to-basics for him.

"Hunt with it," Tyler said, and wiped his nose. "You could use it to spear a fish or small mammal, even a bird."

Dean signed in and handed over his oldest pair of sneakers which he'd taken to wearing to this class.

"Not exactly a zippo and a spray can, huh?" Dean asked, picking up the flint and steel and experimentally striking them together to make a spark.

"You can use it for cooking," Dean said, holding up a stick and miming as he spoke. "Fish or marshmallow on the end and over the fire."

"I'd about kill for a pack of matches," Tyler admitted. "You?"

Anders signed in and turned in his ratty, worn-out sneakers.

"The hell?" asked Anders, picking up the bow and spindle.

"I'd help you hide the body," Dean replied with a wry grin.

"Um." Anders rubbed the back of his neck thoughtfully. "As a stake for a tent if you need to rig up some kind of shelter?"

Tyler half-smiled. "Isn't that the saying? Friends help you move, good friends help you move bodies?"

He tapped the flint and steel together. Nothing.

Bridge shows up barefoot.

Gwynn shows up barefoot and looking a little ill.

Gwynn looked at the flint and steel and sighed. "Usually, I could do this. It's how we do it where I'm from when we're in hiding. but today..."

"It can become a makeshift weapon if you're cornered by guards who think you're defenseless."

"You gotta hit it more sharply," Dean said, demonstrating and sending sparks off the flint. He grinned a little. "I've played around with flint before; just never needed to start a real fire with it."
