“Today, we are going to talk about the history of Jewelry and also learn to work with metals. If you look at this handout you will see that Jewelry has been used for hundreds of thousands of years. It has been used at decoration, as money, as bribes and in religious ceremonies. It has been made from a wide variety of materials, with only one thing in common. Almost always, the materials are of a hard and nearly indestructible nature. One wants these things to last forever, right?”

She looked around the room. “I you to divide into groups and to pick a material that you know Jewelry to be made of. Then you can make a little presentation about your material for the rest of the gang here.”

“Now, lets take a lookat metal. It is by far not a requirement to use it but I want you to be familiar with it. This is silver. It is a precious metal, but easier to work with then gold. You are getting 20 gauge silver wire. I would like you to wrap it tightly around the dowels provided over there and saw through with the jewelers’ saw. You will get a number of jumprings,which you can connect into a chain.”

John walks over towards Agatha in a distinctly mosey-ing way, such as what one does when one has to ask a question and is not sure how best to ask.

Agatha just looks at him expectantly.

John glances over at something that may be doing the equivalent of whistling innocently under a tarp.

Agatha looked at the tarp. "It IS alive then?"

"I don't KNOW.I figured you'd be able to tell,since you're the expert."

"Well, does it move on it's own? What powers it? Does it do what you say? Does it seem to have a will of it's own?"

"On occasion. Windup things, like yours. Sorta, I just, like, point or think or say something. Of course it does, it's a bloody machine."

In most cases, someone getting angry/defensive means they're afraid of something. John's not an exception in this case.

"Right. Well, let me look at it." Agatha walked over and lifted the tarp. The thing wagged it's tail at her. "I'd... say it is alive. I wonder how intelligent it is..."

"So do I," John muttered quietly. He hoped it would stay down until the class wasthrough. Cripes. Shouldn't it have wound down by now?

"Does it do things on it's own? Or do you ahve to tell it?"

"I, er...Funny thing, I told it to protect me, and now it's... like it's always on guard. Guess I copied your defense thing a bit too much. Next time, i'll start inputting perameters before issuing commands."

"Um yes, always smart to limit ones request to atomata of unknown intelligence." Agatha shook her head. "Does it only listen to you?"

"I'm not sure. Wanna tell it to do soemthing?

Agatha shrugged. "Jump up and down."

It looked at Agatha, looked at John (who shrugged), and gave a brief hop. It was a little ungainly, as it's hard to hop when you've 2 arms and a tail.

"That's interesting. Maybe I should tell it to get me a beer."

"Hang on. Don't react in any way, in fact, look the other way or something." She turned to the thing. "Attack John."

It immediately turned and forced itself between Agatha and John, and actually knocked John down in the process. It squatted, balanced on the two arms as the tail hovered over like a scorpion.

"I don't think it liked that. Down, boy."

"Huh." Agatha looked at the thing crittically. "Well, it is bright enough to understand me, and also to protect you." SHe shook her head. "Next time, make it only respodn to YOUR commands though, eh?"

"Hey, I'm not even sure if I finished the programming, much less whom to obey. I was a bit sleep deppy, and for all I know, saying something like 'meglo-maniacal marshmallow center' makes it--"

John's sentence was lost as the happy shiny fun toy went skittering off.

He looked at Agatha. "I don't think I was supposed to do that."

Before either of them could react (much), it came back.

With a load of candy bars that had formerly been residing in John's backpack.

"Wow. So I did make it so it'll fetch me a beer. Wonder what I say?" He takes one of the chocolates and starts to eat it.

"Fetch Beer?" Agatha speculated idelly.

"Considering what makes it fetch chocolate, I doubt I'd make it that simple. "

"good point. Aren't you too young for beer anyway?"

John looked at her. "YOu're right." He turned to his creation. "Dude, get me whiskey." It didn'tmove.
