Veronica might have appeared more subdued than usual when her students arrived this morning.

"Morning," she said. "I hope you all remembered to wear old clothes. Today we're going to learn the process of film developing." She gave them a handout and briefly went over it.

"Okay, I think you're ready to hit the darkroom," she said, forcing a smile. "I'll be here if you have any questions."

Once they were finished developing their photos, Veronica let them wash their hands and then instructed them to take seats in the classroom again so they could brainstorm their prompts for next week before dismissing them.

"I'm afraid I can't come with you this weekend." Archie swallowed and squeezed her hand. "I'm . . . being called home for a few days."

"I'm sorry," Archie said, his voice strained. "It's your birthday, and I wanted to be with you, but I have to go."

"If you have to go, you have to go," Veronica said, terrified to ask the question on her mind.

"Look, let's not talk about this here. When are you leaving?"

Archie closed his eyes and squeezed her hand again.

"Tonight."

"Wow. That happened fast," Veronica said. Just like Nadia.

She took a deep breath. "I have to say goodbye to Nadia and then I was going to move my things back to the dorms and pack for my trip. Can you meet me there?"

Archie nodded. "I may as well do the same. No point in leaving my things in the cabins if . . ." If I'm not coming back. But then, what point is there in leaving them in the dorms, either?

"Well, we're to be moved back to the dorms by Monday anyhow," he finished. "I'll meet you back there shortly."

Archie prolonged the hug a bit longer than necessary. "I'll be waiting for you."
